1856-04-07Commonwealth of Massachusetts Essex, ss: To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly. Greeting. You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth, to notify and warn, in the usual manner, the qualified voters of said town, to meet at the Town Hall, on Monday the Seventh day of April next at half past three o’clock in afternoon, then and there to act on the following articles. - Viz.: 1st. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator, and to choose the same. 2d. To see what measures the town will take in reference to the order of notice from the General Court, on the petition of Charles F. Dodge, and others, praying for authority to the County Commissioners, to locate a highway and bridge in said town, over the tide water of Bass River.- per petition of them Whitney & others. Hereof fail not, but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon to the Town Clerk, at or before the time appointed for said meeting. Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notified the persons therein by posting notifications at or near each of the public meeting houses in town according to the Town Regulations. John J. At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held at the Town Hall on Monday the Seventh day of April A.D.1856 at half past three o’clock in afternoon, in pursuance of the warrant recorded on the next preceding page. The meeting was called to order at the time appointed, by the Town Clerk, who read the warrant therefor. It was then Voted. The Moderator be chosen by hand vote, & William H. Lovett was thus chosen. The 2d Article of the warrant being taken up, Stephens Baker, Esq. submitted the following motion. “That the town will not oppose the petition now before the Legislature from citizens of this town in regard for leave to build a bridge over Bass River. It was Voted, that this motion be laid on the table. Afterwards, on motion of John I. Baker Esq. this motion was again taken up, and after some discussion, was amended by striking out the word “not” in the original motion. And the motion as thus amended was then adopted as follows.- Voted. That the town will oppose the petition now before the Legislature from citizens of this town in regard for leave to build a bridge over Bass River. Voted. That the Chairman of the Selectmen and Wyatt C. Boyden be a committee to oppose the petition in the Legislature. Voted. That this meeting be dissolved, and it was accordingly so declared by the Moderator. Attest. James Hill, Town Clerk.
