1856-02-01Commonwealth of Massachusetts Essex, ss: To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly. Greeting. You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth, to notify and warn in the usual manner, the legally qualified voters of said Town, to meet at the Town Hall on Friday the first day of February next, at two o’clock afternoon, for the following purposes, viz.. 1st. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator, and to choose same. 2d. To see what action the Town will take in regard to altering or amending the Bylaws of the town as regards the letting of the Town Hall for dancing or for any other lawful purpose for which it may be required - per petitioner J. S. Haskell and others. Hereof fail not, but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon, before the time of said meeting. Given under our hands and seal this twenty-fourth day of January in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred & Fifty Six Lawson WalkerSelectmen Warren Prince of George S. Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notified the persons therein named of the time and place of said meeting by posting notices at each of the public meeting houses in said Town according to the Town Regulations. At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held in pursuance of the warrant recorded on the proceeding page, at the Town Hall on Friday the First day of February, 1856, at two o’clock afternoon, it was voted That a Moderator be chosen by hand vote, & David C. Foster was then chosen, The following motion was offered by Joseph T. Haskell Voted. That all festivals, social gatherings, levees, or other gatherings of the citizens of this Town to which the Selectmen shall let the Town Hall, dancing and other innocent amusements, may be allowed til 12 o’clock. A motion to indefinitely postpone Mr. Haskell’s motion was offered by Jonathan Batchelder & rejected 75 in favor 109 opp. Mr. Haskell’s motion was then adopted. On motion of Joseph T. Haskell it was then Voted. That all acts, or votes, inconsistent with the foregoing heretofore passed, the same are hereby repealed. Voted. That this meeting be dissolved, and it was so declared.
