1857-09-15Commonwealth of Massachusetts Essex, ss: To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly. Greeting. You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth to notify and warn in the usual manner the qualified voters of said town, to meet at the Town Hall on Tuesday the fifteenth day of September current, at Two o’clock afternoon for the following purposes: - viz.: - 1st. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator, and to choose the same. 2d. To see what measures the town will adopt in relation to an indictment against them for not establishing and maintaining a High School; whether by defending the suit consequent thereon, or endeavoring to settle the same, or, to take any other action thereon that they may deem best for the interest of the town. Hereof fail not, but made due return of this warrant with your doings thereon before the time of said meeting. Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notified the persons therein named as therein directed by posting notices thereof at or near each of the public meeting houses in town according to the Town Regulations. James Hill, Town Clerk At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held, in pursuance of the warrant recorded on the next preceding page, at the Town Hall on Tuesday the 15th day of September 1857, at Two o’clock afternoon. Voted. That a Moderator be chosen by hand vote, and Frederick W. Choate was thus chosen. The 2d Article of the warrant was then taken up and after some remarks by the Moderator and several other gentlemen upon motion of Edward Pousland it was.- Voted. That the Selectmen with full power to defend the interest of the town in the suit consequent upon the indictment for not establishing and maintaining a High School. The foregoing motion was advocated by the mover and Jonathan Batchelder, and opposed by Dr. Boyden, M. Whitney, J. Safford, H. D. Whitney, & Rev. Mr. Rich. Voted. That this meeting be dissolved, and it was so declared to be by the Moderator. A true record.Attest. James Hill, Town Clerk.
