1844-11-11Essex, ss. Beverly - To one of the Constables of said Town - Greeting - You are hereby required in the name of Commonwealth of Massachusetts to notify and warn the qualified voters of said Town to meet at the Town Hall on Monday the eleventh day of November next at nine o’clock in the forenoon (by posting notices according to Town Regulations) for the following purposes: To see if the Town will send one or more persons to represent them in the next General Court if they so decide to give in their ballots for the purpose of choosing the same. Also, to give in their ballots for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of this Commonwealth and for Senators for this County for the ensuing political year. Also, to give in their ballots for a Representative, in the twenty-ninth Congress of the United States, from this District. Also, to give in their ballots for Electors of President and Vice President of the United States for the next presidential term. The ballots will be received on one piece of paper, and the poll will open immediately after deciding upon sending Representatives and close at four o’clock, afternoon. Hereof fail not but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon before said time. At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the Town of Beverly held on Monday the eleventh day of November in the year eighteen hundred and forty-four - pursuant to the warrant on the preceding page and for the purposes therein specified - commencing at Nine o’clock - Before Noon at the Town Hall; Voted, to choose two Representatives to the next General Court. The Electors then proceeded to give in their ballots for the same and for the several other purposes specified in the warrant - and the whole number of ballots given in for town representatives was found to be after sorting and counting the same - eight hundred and ninety-eight. And they were for the following persons Albert Thorndike, four hundred and eighty-one votes. John I. Baker - four hundred and eighty-six free votes. John Porter 2d - two hundred and ninety-five votes. Abraham Edwards - two hundred and ninety-four votes. William T. Crosfield - one hundred twenty votes. Joseph E. Ober - one hundred and eighteen votes Edwin M. Stone - one vote. Samuel Lummus - one vote. John Wilson - one vote. John Tuck 2d - one vote. Whole number of ballots, eight hundred and ninety-eight - necessary to a choice - four hundred and fifty Messrs. Thorndike & Baker having more than that number are declared elected - Attest. John I. At the forenamed legal town meeting of qualified voters of the Town of Beverly - the whole number of persons who gave in their ballots for Governor was ascertained as is directed in the Revised Statutes (Chap. 4, Sec. than the fifth 13) by counting the whole number of separate ballots given in; and the whole number of ballots was eight hundred and ninety-eight. And the whole number of votes given in for Governor was sorted, counted and recorded and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the following persons; viz: George N. Briggs of Pittsfield - four hundred and eighty-one votes. George Bancroft of Boston - three hundred votes. Samuel E. Sewall of Roxbury. One hundred and sixteen votes. Wendell Phillips of Boston one vote. And the whole number of persons who gave in their ballots for Lieutenant Governor was ascertained by counting the whole number of separate ballots given in as above; and the whole number of ballots was - Eight hundred and ninety-six. And the whole number of votes given in for Lieutenant Governor was sorted, counted and recorded and declaration thereof made as above; and said votes were for the following persons; viz.. John Reed of Yarmouth, four hundred and eighty-one votes. Henry H. Childs of Pittsfield, two hundred and ninety-eight votes. William Jackson of Newton, one hundred and seventeen votes. And the whole number of ballots given in for a Representative in Congress from District Number Two, was ascertained in the aforesaid manner; and the whole number of ballots was - Eight hundred and ninety-six. And the whole number of votes given in, was sorted, counted and recorded and declaration thereof made; - and said votes were for the following persons; viz. Daniel T. King of Danvers, four hundred and eighty-one George Hood of Lynn, two hundred and ninety-four. Henry B. Stanton of Chelsea, one hundred and twenty-one. Attest. John I. Baker, Town Clerk. And the whole lumber of persons who gave in their ballots for Senators for the District of Essex at the foregoing town meeting was ascertained as is directed in the Revised Statutes (Chap. 4, Sec. 13), by counting the number of separate ballots given in; and the whole number of ballots was - eight hundred and ninety-four. And the whole number of votes were sorted, counted and recorded and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the following persons; viz. Francis S. Newhall of Lynn, four hundred and seventy-nine votes. Alfred Kittredge of Haverhill, four hundred and seventy-nine votes. Thomas J. Clark of Salisbury, four hundred and seventy-nine votes. George Wheatland of Salem, four hundred and seventy-nine votes. Edmund Kimball Jr. of Wenham, four hundred and seventy-nine votes. William Prescott of Lynn, two hundred and ninety-eight votes. Samuel B. Gregory of Marblehead, two hundred and ninety-eight votes. Samuel Gilbert of Gloucester, two hundred and ninety-eight votes. Nathaniel Foster of Newburyport, two hundred and ninety-eight votes. William Taggart of Haverhill, two hundred and ninety-eight votes. John Russ Jr. of Methuen one hundred and seventeen votes. Jesse Putnam of Danvers, one hundred and seventeen votes. Dan Weed of Ipswich, one hundred and seventeen votes. William Carey of Amesbury, one hundred and seventeen votes. The whole number of persons who gave in their ballots at the aforesaid town meeting for Electors of President and Vice President of United States was ascertained as is directed in the Revised Statutes (Chapter 4, Section 13) by counting the whole lumber of ballots given in; and the whole number of ballots was - Eight hundred and eighty two. And the whole number of votes given in were received, sorted, counted and declared, and record thereof made in open town meeting, as by law is directed; and said votes were as follows; viz. .
