1842-11-14To Essex, ss.. To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly. Greeting. You are hereby required in the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to notify & warn the qualified voters of said town to meet at the Town Hall on Monday, the fourteenth day of November current at half past Eight o’clock in the forenoon, by posting notices according to Town Regulations, to act on the following articles: 1st. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator, and to choose the same. 2nd. To act on the petition of George Brown & others to see what measures the town will adopt in regard to purchasing the Gun House on the Common. 3rd. To see what measures the town will adopt in regard to finishing an Armory in the building in the rear of the Town Hall, by confirming or granting authority or otherwise. By the foregoing authority, you are also further required to notify & warn said voters, by posting notices according to Town Regulations, to meet at said Hall on Monday aforesaid at half past nine o’clock in said forenoon for the following purposes: To see if the town will send one or more persons to represent them in the next General Court, and if they do decide to give in their ballots for the purpose of choosing the same, also to give in their ballots for Governor & Lieutenant Governor of this Commonwealth & For Senator for this district for the ensuing political year & for a Representative in the next Congress of United States from District Number Two: - The ballots will be received on one piece of paper & the poll will open immediately after deciding upon sending Representatives, & close at four o’clock P.M. — hereof fail not, but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon before said time. At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly, held on Monday, the fourteenth day of November A.D. 1842. Voted, to choose a Moderator, by nomination. Wm. H. Lovett, was then chosen Moderator. On the second article in the warrant it was Voted, that the petitioners have leave to withdraw. On the 3d article, Voted, that the Selectmen be authorized to fit up an armory in the building in the rear of the Town Hall, at an expense not to exceed three hundred dollars- Voted, that this meeting be dissolved which was so declared to be. Bradstreet Town Clerk Pursuant to the warrant on page 50, the qualified voters of Beverly and town meeting on Monday the fourteenth day of November, A.D. 1842 and before proceeding to ballot. Voted, to send two persons to represent this town at the next General Court. The ballots were then given in, and the whole number of ballots for Representatives was ascertained according to law to be; eight hundred and forty-four. And the same were sorted, counted, recorded and declaration thereof made, and were as follows; Necessary to a choice - Four hundred and twenty-three. John Pickett, had three hundred & fifty-five. Edwin M. Stone, had three hundred and sixty-six. Edward Pousland, had three hundred & thirty-four. John Porter 2nd had three hundred and forty-nine. John Wilson, had one hundred and thirty-one. Samuel Lummus, had one hundred and thirty-six. Charles Stephens had one. John I. Baker had one. Robert Rantoul had one. Josiah Lovett 2d had one. William Endicott had one. Calvin Lord had one. Wm.
