1842-11-28Essex , ss. To one of the Constables all of the town of Beverly. Greeting. You are hereby required in the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to notify and warn the qualified voters of said Town, by posting notices according to Town Regulations, to meet at the Town Hall on Monday the twenty-eighth day of November current at nine o’clock in the forenoon to act on the following Articles. 1st. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator and to choose the same. 2nd. To see if the Town will repeal the Seventh Section of the Bylaws or amend the same, so as to take off the penalty for smoking in the streets, according to the petition of Stephen Abbott and others. You are also required by said authority in like manner further to warn the said voters to meet at said Hall on Monday aforesaid at half past nine o’clock in said forenoon for the following purposes: To decide whether the Town will send two representatives to the next General Court, and if they so decide to give in their ballots for the purpose of choosing the same, according to the petition of Paul Hildreth and others. The poll will open immediately after deciding upon sending Representatives, & close at four o’clock P.M. Bradstreet, Town Clerk At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly, held on Monday the twenty-eighth day of November A.D. 1842. Voted to choose a Moderator by nomination. William H. Lovett was then chosen. On the 2nd article in the warrant, Voted, that the Seventh Section of the Bylaws of the Town be repealed. Pursuant to the Warrant on pg. 57, the qualified voters of Beverly, in town meeting, on Monday the twenty-eighth day of November A.D. 1842 and before proceeding to ballot Voted, to send two persons to represent this town in the next General Court. The ballots were then given in, and the whole number of ballots for the Representatives was ascertained, according to law, to be- eight hundred & eighty-four. The same were assorted, counted, recorded and declaration thereof made, and were as follows- Necessary to a choice - four hundred & forty-three. Edwin M. Stone had - four hundred & eleven. Joseph E. Ober had - four hundred & three. Edward Pousland had - four hundred & fifty-two John Porter 2nd had - three hundred & fifty-five. John Wilson had - one hundred & twelve. Samuel Lummus had - one hundred & eleven. John Pickett had three. Jeremiah Butman had one. Wm. Endicott had, one. Charles Stephens head, one. Robt. Rantoul had, one. E. Stone had, one.
