1885-02-16Commonwealth of Massachusetts Essex ss. To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly. Greeting: You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth to notify and warn, in the usual manner, the qualified voters of said town, to meet at the Town Hall in said Beverly, on Monday the sixteenth day of February instant at half past seven o'clock in the afternoon for the following purposes, viz.; 1st. To choose a Moderator. 2d. To take such action as may be deemed expedient upon the petition now pending before legislature for a grant of authority to the town of Beverly to take water directly from Wenham Pond for the use of its inhabitants and to erect suitable works therefor. 3d. To take action upon the petition of the city of Salem also now pending before the legislature with reference to Sewerage in and from North River in said city. Hereof fail not, but made to return of this warrant in your doings thereon before said time. Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notified the persons therein named as therein directed, by posting notifications stating the time, place, and objects of said meeting in each of the several places in town required by the Town Regulations. Lovett, Town Clerk At the legal meeting of the qualified voters in the town of Beverly held, or in pursuance of the warrant recorded above, at the Town Hall in said town on Monday the sixteenth day of February in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five at half past seven o'clock in the afternoon, the meeting having been called the to order at the time appointed, by the Hon. John I. Baker, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, who read the warrant therefor, the Clerk being absent, it was Voted, by ballot, that Charles L. Dodge be Town Clerk pro tem, to serve during this meeting, and was then duly sworn to the faithful discharge of his duties before John I. Baker, Justice of the Peace. It was Voted that the Moderator be chosen by hand vote. It was Voted that Andrew E. Story be Moderator. Upon Article 2. Independent Water Supply. It was Voted that the Selectmen together with Messrs. John T. Morse Jr., Augustus N. Clark, Edward L. Giddings, Robert R. Endicott, Francis Norwood, Dennis W. Quill, John B. Hill, John H. Woodbury, Peter E. Clark and John H. Watson be a committee to represent the town before the committee of the Legislature on Water Supply in favor of the petition of John I. Baker and others to take water directly from Wenham Pond for the use of its inhabitants, and to erect suitable works therefor. Upon Article 3. Sewerage from City of Salem. It was Voted the subject of this article be referred to the Selectmen with authority to employ counsel in opposition to the city of Salem discharging its sewerage into Beverly harbor.
