1884-07-16Commonwealth of Massachusetts Essex, ss. To either of the Constables of Beverly in said county. Greeting: You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth to notify and warn, in the manner provided by the regulations of the town, the qualified voters of said town to meet at the Town Hall in said Beverly, on Wednesday the sixteenth day of July current at thirty minutes past seven o'clock after noon, for the following purposes, to viz.; 1st. To choose a moderator 2d. To act upon the remonstrance of Wm. H. Bell and others against the occupation of the town's "Bancroft lot at the junction of Hale and Endicott Streets" by any building; and upon their petition to see if the town will purchase or otherwise provide a lot of land other than the above named, for the purpose of erecting thereon the building and hose tower for the steam fire engines and hook and the ladder truck which was voted for and authorized at the town meeting held May 28, 1884, and rescind any portion of any vote which authorizes the erection of said building on the first named lot, with the express understanding that the erection of said building shall proceed as soon as possible upon the lot that may be decided upon. Hereof fail not, but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereupon, before the time of holding said meeting. Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notify the persons therein named as therein directed, by posting notifications stating that time, place, and objects of said meeting at each of the several places in town required by the town regulations. Lovett, Town Clerk At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held, in pursuance of the warrant recorded on the next preceding page, at the Town Hall in said town on Wednesday the sixteenth day of July in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty four at thirty minutes past seven o'clock afternoon. The meeting having been called to order, at the time appointed, by the Clerk, who read the warrant therefor, It was Voted that the Moderator be chosen by hand vote. Voted that Freeborn W. Cressy be Moderator. Upon Article 2. Location of Engine House, etc. A motion by Charles H. Cressy "That's so much of the vote passed at the town meeting of May 28, 1884, as authorizes the erection of the building and hose tower for the steam engine and hook and the ladder truck on the Bancroft lot at the junction of Hale and Endicott streets is hereby rescinded and the building committee appointed at that meeting is hereby authorized and directed to purchase or otherwise procure another lot of land, other than that first named, within reasonable distance of the Town Hall, and to proceed at once with the erection of the said proposed building upon such new location as they may purchase or procure under the authority of this vote." was stated, and a motion to amend the same by referring to the Building Committee the matter of ascertaining to what other lots of land can be procured for the above named purpose and reporting thereon at an adjournment of this meeting was lost. A motion that action on the original question be taken by a yea and nay vote was lost. The original motion was then proposed to the meeting and was lost. It was Voted that the meeting be dissolved.
