The following report of the Selectmen was read, "Beverly, April 29, 1881. Upon the subject of an increased head of water for the inhabitants of the town of Beverly this board would report that the vote passed by this town April 4, 1881, authorizing a modification of the contract between the City of Salem and the Town of Beverly for the supplying the inhabitants of said Beverly with water, has been accepted by the City Council of Salem and the necessary papers have been signed by the persons thereto duly authorized. Water Supply for Beverly Farms The report of the Selectmen was read and is as follows; viz: "Beverly, April 29, 1881. Upon the subject of an increased supply of water for the inhabitants of Beverly Farms this Board would report That they have personally examined three different routes through that part of the town known as the "Commons" and find that to make the circuit mentioned in our report of April 16, i.e. through Greenwood Avenue to connect with the pipe on Webster Street a distance of 5450 feet would cost $8500.00 which is $1000.00 more than was stated in the last report. A second route from Common Street through Hammond Swamp to Haskell Street a distance of 3800 feet will cost $6000.00 for laying the pipe. A third route from Greenwood Avenue through "Tuck's Lot" a distance of 4800 feet will cost $8500.00 for laying the pipe. The second route is through a swamp which it will be necessary to drain, the third, will require the removal of a large amount of ledge, the expense of which is included in the estimate given. Both the second and third routes are through private lands and it will be necessary to lay out and build a road before pipe can be laid should either of them be adopted. The cost of building the road and the land damages incident thereto are not included in the estimate given. We would recommend that the connection of the supply pipes be made as stated in our two former reports, i.e. by connecting the Common Street pipe with the Haskell Street pipe via Hale Street a distance of about 1900 feet the estimated cost of which is about $2000.00. Joseph Wilson Selectmen J. H. Young of Freeborn W. Cressy Beverly" It was Voted that this report be accepted. Upon motion of Josiah A. Haskell it was Voted that the connection of the supply pipes be made as recommended by the Selectmen in the foregoing report. Upon motion of Joseph Wilson it was Voted that the sum of Two Thousand dollars be appropriated and assessed to defray the expense of laying the water pipe according to the above vote. Upon motion of John I. Baker it was Voted that the Selectmen be requested to call a town meeting in the aftemoon, as soon as practicable after the expiration of thirty days from the time Governor Long signs the Act authorizing the Town of Beverly to issue bonds, for the purpose of enabling the town to vote upon said Act.
