1880-04-05At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held at the Town Hall in said Beverly on Monday the fifth day of April in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty at One o'clock in the afternoon the same being an adjournment of the Annual Town Meeting held on the first and second days of March in the same year it was. Voted, by ballot, that Ansel J. Cheney and William M. Woodbury be Constables in place of Isaac F. Day and Benjamin F. Herrick who declined to serve. Voted, by hand vote, that the following persons be Field Drivers in place of others elected who declined to serve Ward 4, Samuel F. Collamer in place of James M. Andrews Ward 5, Isaac Standley in place of Asa J. Osborne Ward 6, Edward F. Danforth in place of Ezra S. Foster Ward 9, John G. Brown in place of Jonathan Dodge Ward 10, Alna H. Dodge in place of Oliver Edwards Ward 12, Benjamin W. Standley in place of Joshua S. Dodge Voted that Charles L. Moulton be Pound Keeper in place of Nathaniel Rogers who declined to serve. Voted that the Selectmen be authorized to appoint four Measurers of Wood and Bark. Upon Article 14. Dodge's Row School House. The report of the School Committee to whom the subject of this Article was referred was read and accepted and is as follows. "The School Committee, to whom the 14th Article in the warrant was referred would respectfully report. Having examined the present School House in Dodge's Row and consulted with parties interested in that part of the Town we deem it expedient that a new school house be built large enough to accommodate from thirty eight to forty scholars-: and would, therefore, recommend to the Town that a School house be built at Dodge's Row on the present locality the cost of which, for building and furnishing, shall not exceed fifteen hundred dollars. Ephraim A. Edwards Sub Committee Isaac F. Day" Upon motion of John I. Baker it was Voted that the recommendation of the School Committee as per their report, be adopted, and that a school house be built at Dodge' s Row on the present school house lot. Upon motion of Edward F. Danforth it was Voted that two hundred dollars in addition to the amount recommended by the School Committee be appropriated for the completion of the school house at Dodge's Row and to buy land adjoining if any is needed. Upon motion of Robert R. Endicott it was Voted that the sum of Seventeen Hundred Dollars be appropriated and assessed the current year to pay the expense of building the school house at Dodge's Row. Upon motion of Jeremiah Choate it was Voted that the School Committee be authorized to carry into effect the provisions of the votes relating to the building of the school house at Dodge's Row. A motion made by William W. Hinkley to reconsider a vote passed March 2, A.D. 1880, whereby it was voted "that action on the street light petitioned for to be established on Pleasant Street be indefinitely postponed," was put to the meeting and lost. A supplementary report of the Selectmen relating to the extension of the water pipe on Neptune Street and Bay View Avenue (see file) was read and accepted. Upon motion of John I. Baker it was Voted that the subject of laying the water pipe on Neptune Street and Bay View Avenue to the estate of Amory A. Lawrence be referred to the Selectmen and that they be authorized to expend a sum not exceeding one thousand dollars to lay the water pipe in said street. Voted that One Thousand Dollars be appropriated and assessed the current year to pay the expenses of laying the water pipe in accordance with the above vote. Upon motion of George S. Millett it was Voted to reconsider a vote passed by the Town March 2 A.D., 1880 whereby it was voted "that the sum of Twenty Thousand dollars be appropriated and assessed to be paid into the Sinking Fund the present year." A motion or indefinite postponement of this subject having been put to the meeting and lost, the original motion on the appropriation was put to the meeting and also lost. Upon motion of Joseph E. Ober it was Voted that the sum of Fifteen Thousand dollars be appropriated and assessed the current year to be paid into the Sinking Fund. Upon motion of William W. Hinkley it was Voted that the Selectmen be instructed to call the next annual town meeting at fifteen minutes past eight o'clock in the forenoon and to close the polls at two o'clock in the afternoon unless otherwise ordered by the meeting.
