1689-11-01[Selectmen November 1, 1689]
At a meeting of the Selectmen on the first day of November 1689: said Selectmen did bargain
to & with John Ellinwood of our town of Beverly as followeth that said Ellinwood shall take into his
custody from the day of the date hereof Joshua Turland now in the hands of the Selectmen & him said
Turland to keep & maintain said Turland in meat, drink, washing & lodging with necessary clothing
the term of one whole year from the day of the date hereof & in consideration & for the keeping of
said Turland said Selectmen do by these presents do engage to & with said Ellinwood in the behalf
of the town of Beverly to pay unto said Ellinwood or his order ye nine pounds in pay that is to say
four pound and ten shillings at the entry of said Turland’s year the other four pounds10s at the end
of said term said Selectmen do stand engaged to said Ellinwood in the behalf of said town to see to
the honest performance of the same & a witness hereof we the said Selectmen & John Ellinwood have
interchangeably set our hands the day & year first above written. (The word necessary clothing
