1688-01-02[Selectmen January 2, 1688] At a meeting of the Selectmen on the second day of January, in the year of our Lord 1687/8 said Selectmen being sensible of their duty to add something towards the maintenance of the illegitimate daughter of Benjamin Trask of the town’s money or pay did make this payment as followeth which was that said Selectmen did and by these presents do bargain to and with Joseph Hibbert of said Beverly to pay or cause to be paid unto said Hibbert six and twenty shillings as an additionn to the two shillings and six pounds per week that said Trask is obliged to pay or said Trask his surety said pay to be paid as money unto said Hibbert or his order within one whole year after that the date hereof. And said Hibbert doth hereby promise and engage to keep and maintain said child one whole year from the day of the date hereof and to find said child all things convenient for such child for and in consideration of the above-mentioned pay in witness hereof we the abovesaid Selectmen and Joseph Hibbert have interchangeably set to our hands the day and year first above written always provided upon further consideration said selectmen do hereby promise in the behalf of said Town of Beverly to find said child or clothing for said year. WitnessesRoger Haskins Benjamin EllinwoodZachariah Herrick William DodgeAndrew Elliott Selectmen Joseph + Hibbert his mark At a meeting of the Selectmen on the second day of January 1687/8 said selectmen did bargain to and with William Bath of our Town of Beverly as followeth that said Beth should take into his custody from the day of the date hereof Joshua Turland now in the custody of said selectmen and him the said to Turland to keep and maintain said Turland in meet, drink, washing & lodging for and during the term of one whole year from the day of the date hereof. And in consideration and for the keeping of said Turland said selectmen do by these presents engage to & with said Bath in the behalf of the Town of Beverly to pay unto said Bath or his order six pounds in pay three pounds of said six pounds to be paid at or before the first day of June next ensuing the date hereof the other three pounds at the expiration of said year and further that the said selectmen do stand hereby engaged unto said Bath in behalf of said town to find said Turland clothing for said year and some tobacco and in witness hereof we the said selectmen and William Bath have here unto set our hands interchangeably day and year first above written said Bath stands bound to mend and repair said Turland’s clothes.
