20: 10 mo.: ‘86. At the same meeting of the Selectmen said selectmen did bargain and agree in behalf
of the Town of Beverly with John Ellelthorp of the Town of Manchester as followeth that the said
Ellethorp should take into his custody the day of the date here of Joshua Turland now of Beverly and
in the power of said selectmen to dispose of for said Town and do by these presents hire out or let
unto said Ellethorp the said Turland for one full year from the day of the date hereof to serve said
Ellethorp and all his to the utmost of his abilities in such employment as said Ellethorp shall think
meets to employe him the said Turland in and for and in consideration of said service the said
Ellethorp is to find and provide for & to said Turland meat, drink, clothing, washing, lodging & all
other necessaries befitting such a servant and the said Ellethorp doth by these presents further engage
to return the said Turland suitably clothed to the value of three pounds in clothes at the expiration
of said time. And for the more comfortable subsistence of said Turland the said selectmen do hereby
promise and engage to pay unto said Ellethorp three pounds in current pay viz.: thorty shillings at or
before the first day of March next ensuing the date hereof and the other thirty shillings at or before
the four and twentieth day of June in the year abovesaid–10th day of December 1686–

At a meeting of the selectmen of Beverly there was a rate made for the collecting of Mr.
Hale’s salary or stipend which was to be paid unto Mr. Hale out of said rate in money two and thirty
pounds said money to be paid quarterly that is to say eight pounds per quarter the year beginning the
first day of November in the year 1686: the whole rate amounting to thirty four pounds nineteen
shillings & nine pence the overplus besides Mr. Hale’s thirty two pounds is two pounds nineteen
shillings and nine pence which overplus is to be paid unto the Selectmen for the uses of said town
within said year as the said selectmen shall have occasion for the use of said Town said rate being
committed unto Edmund Gale then Constable for the gathering and paying as abovesaid said Gale
being Constable of Mackerel Cove squadron in said Beverly.
At the same meeting of the Selectmen or there was another rate made to be gathered in money
amounting to nine and thirty pounds eleven shillings and eight pence and committed to the care &:
gathering of Thomas Cage, then Constable of Bass River squadron in Beverly, and the said money
being gathered to be paid as followeth viz. two and thirty pounds unto Mr. Hale said two and thirty
pounds to be paid quarterly for first-quarter beginning on the first day November: 1686: & so
successively eight pounds per quarter and overplus over and above and besides Mr. Hale’s two and
thirty pounds is seven pounds six shillings: &: eight pence which said seven pounds six shillings &
eight pence: is to be paid an unto the selectmen or their order within said year for the use of said town
as occasion shall require.
