1685-02-17[Selectmen February 17, 1685] At a meeting of the Selectmen 17:12:1684/5 paid to Mr. Stearns twelve shillings in money for mending ye glass in the meeting house. At a meeting of the Selectmen 17:12:1684/5 reckoned with William Livermore Constable for the one moiety of a half country rate made and committed to said Livermore bearing date ye 17:4:1684 and he hath paid ye just sum of four pounds ten shillings of the abovesaid 4 £ was paid to ye former Selectmen and 3s. of the four pounds abovesaid was allowed as losses of the abovesaid rate. th At a meeting of the Selectmen the 17 of the 12:1684/5 Richard Ober & John Giles brought a receipt as followeth: Received of John Giles & Richard Ober, Constables of Beverly, for ye year 1683 for the county rate which was paid to Mr. Daniel Line ten pounds twelve shillings and eight pence in money which upon you third updated amount to sixteen pounds which was ye full of Beverly rate. Per me John Appleton, treasurer for ye county. At ye same meeting of ye Selectmen Richard Ober & John Giles gave in this receipt as followeth. Received of Richard Ober & John Giles or their order for ye rate made an: 1683 the sum of seventy pounds this 16:12:1684/5. Per me John Hale. At the same meeting of ye Selectmen reckoned with John Giles who was Constable for ye year ‘83 for ye over plus of Mr. Hale’s rate bearing date the 23 of June’83 and he ye said Giles remains in the town’s debt the just sum of 3 shillings. At ye same meeting of ye Selectmen reckoned with Richard Ober who was Constable for ye year’83 for ye over plus of Mr. Hale’s rate bearing date the 23 of June ‘83 and for a county rate bearing date ye 30:11: ‘83 and he ye said Ober did then pay thirty-five shillings in money the which thirty-five shillings was in full satisfaction for the abovesaid rates. At ye same meeting of ye Selectmen reckoned with John Giles who was Constable for ye year’83 for ye county rate bearing date ye 30 Feb. ‘83 and then received of ye said Giles eight shillings in money which eight shillings did balance for ye abovesaid rate. It is to be understood that Mr. Hale’s rate is fully satisfied any former record [of said rate] notwithstanding. At ye same meeting of ye Selectmen at Ephraim Herrick & George Standley who were Constables for ye year 1681 did produce a receipt from Mr. Hale as followeth: These are to signify yet I have received by order of at Ephraim Herrick & George Standley out of ye rate made 1681 ye sum of sixty-five pounds this 22 of June 1683. Per me John Hale The which together with 5 £ allowed by Mr. Hale out of the abovesaid rate toward ye building of ye new meeting house amounts to seventy pounds. At the same meeting of ye Selectmen reckoned with Ephraim Herrick who was Constable for ye year ‘81 for ye over plus of Mr. Hale’s rate 26:5:1681 he ye said Herrick remains in the town’s debt ye just sum of two pounds seventeen shillings.
