April 11 1676 there being a meeting of the Selectmen: we have according to the gift and
grant: of the town laid out unto Samuel Hardie, schoolmaster, an acre of the upland ground which
was bought of John Sampson & and it is bounded on the north by the land of Goodman Hibbard on
the east by the land of Mr. Hale: on the south by the town’s land which is the remainder of the four
acres of land bought of Sampson: on the west by the country Highway: which said land is given unto
the said Samuel Hardie: by the town of Beverly: to him and his heirs and assigns forever: provided
that he the said Samuel Hardie does not go away: the or leave of his employment of teaching school
till he have taught school here the full term of seven years: and if the said Hardie do go away or leave
his said employment within the said term of time: then the said town of Beverly shall receive of him
the said Hardie the sum of five pounds which is the price now set upon the said land: or if not the said
sum: then the land shall return again to the town & shall remain to their use & behoof: the town only
paying unto the said Hardie: for any improvement by him made upon the same: which is the true
agreement & contract & grant of the town of Beverly.
A Copy of Mr. Hale’s Order
To the Selectmen of Beverly these are to order you to dispose: of six pounds of my last year’s
salary under the collection of Edward Dodge & John Sampson: to help defray those public charges
arising this present war: as of the country rate fortification: ammunition for the town & your receipt
to the collectors shall be discharged from me to them: you disposing of it as shall be most needful for

At a meeting of the Selectmen the 11 April 1676 they ordered that William Dodge junior.
& John Lovett should join with the Constables diligently to look into families that there be no hidden
and persons found in the town but to proceed with them according as the law directs
