1779-02-24th At a Meeting of the Selectmen February 24 1779. Ordered the Treasurer to pay William Gray £ 5-9-6 for repairing of the Grammar School House windows in the Common. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Benjamin Creesy Jr. 24/2 abatement of his son’s poll, being taken by the enemy. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Capt. James Lovett forty shillings of the Town’s money being abatement of his boy, Benjamin Lovett’s, poll, died before a the tax was made. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Capt. Joseph Rea one hundred and sixty-two pounds as one of the Committee to Supply the Families of the Soldiers to enable them to procure necessaries for them agreeable a resolve of Court. th At a Meeting of the Selectmen of Beverly February the 24 1779 - they ordered that a Town Meeting should be warned and held on Monday the eighth day of March next at the stated place for holding of Town meetings in said Town at ten o’clock in the forenoon for the following particulars. Viz. 1ly. To choose Town offices for the ensuing year & a Committee of Correspondence, Inspection & Safety. 2. To choose a the County Treasurer. 3ly. To see if the Town will mend their Highway the year ensuing by a tax on the polls and estates of the Inhabitants and determine what wages they will give per day for that service. Also see what sum of money they will grant to be raised for that purpose and act any thing relative thereto that may then be thought proper. 4ly. To see if the Town will give Liberty for their swine to go at large the ensuing year being yoked and ringed as the law directs. 5ly. To choose a Committee to Supply the Soldiers’ Families that are in the Continental Army for the year ensuing and order how said Committee may have money to enable them to perform that service. 6ly. To see if the Town will give Thomas Hovey Liberty to work of his Highway tax the current year of a way between the house he lives in and the Country Road. And there was a warrant issued out to Constable Edward Trask by order of the Selectmen to warn the same accordingly. Attest, Joseph Wood, T. Clerk.
