1778-03-03d At a Meeting of the Selectmen Mar. 3 1778. Ordered the Treasurer to pay William Green five pound six shillings 100/ of said sum is for credit which ought to have been given him in the military tax in 1777 but by mistake it was omitted in said tax & 6/ for his highway tax being worked out. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Daniel Wallis 16/10 for gun worms and sundries found and made by him for cannon etc. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Henry Phelps 10/ for helping move Wm. Lovett with the small pox. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Lieut. Theophilus Herrick 18/ for his team and man to move Asa Woodberry’s family from Doctor Woodberry’s house to put the small pox. Joseph Wood presented his account of the pork and beef that was stored in his hand in the year 1777 to be disposed of to the poor of the Town. It appeared to the Selectmen that he had delivered out all of the same to sundry poor persons of the Town and is hereby discharged for the same. At the above said meeting of the Selectmen, they ordered the Treasurer to pay Capt. William Langdell two pound seven shillings and six pence which together with eight pound of money which he received for goods sold of Miss Elizabeth Rogers is in full of his account of 10-7-6 as followeth. To putting out the poor and appraising their clothing0-8-0 To six days apportioning Surveyors list and making of the Highway Tax.1-14-0 To time spend about the small pox.1-0-0 To cash paid for a pair of breeches for John Martin, moosehide ones.2-8-0 To John’s nursing of Bradshaw and Samuel Dane 12 days at 6/ per day.3-12-0 To sundry necessaries found for them.0-3-6 To keeping of Daniel Woodberry’s cow when the Town had his house to put12-0 small pox in. To 3 days time settling of Town affairs.1-0-0 £ 10-7-6 Ordered the Treasurer to pay Joshua Ellinwood fifteen shillings in full for house rent for Mrs. Todd to the date hereof. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Benjamin Obear eight pounds and 9 pence £ 7 – 10 – 0 of said sum for taking and keeping of Joseph Peirce, a poor boy until he shall be twenty-one years old and 10/9 for sundries found by him for the support of Joseph Peirce’s wife by order of the Selectmen, she being extreme poor. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Dea.Wallis eleven shillings for mending of shoes for John Martin in full to this day. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Benjamin Balch Lovett 80/ in part for keeping of Mary Woodberry as per agreement. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Joseph Foster seventeen pound one shilling and five pence in full for 506 lb. of beef for the poor of the Town 98 lb. of which was delivered to John Clark’s family very poor. 408 lb. was stored with Joseph Wood to deliver out to sundry poor persons as they shall stand in need therefor. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Amos Cheever six pound thirteen shillings and four pence for keeping of district school in the Farm Ward this winter season. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Peter Ober Jr. 39/2 abatement of his son’s poll tax, he being in the hands of the enemy. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Mr. Henry Herrick Jr. by one order eight pounds and in one the other fourteen pounds which is in full for keeping of the grammar school two months which th commenced on the 25 of December last. Ordered the Treasurer to pay the several persons, soldiers in the Continental Army, the sum annexed to each of their names and as followeth. Viz. To William Woodberry 3d£ 1 – 0 – 0 To William Woodberry 3d1 – 0 – 0 To Robert Edwards1 – 0 – 0 To Mathias Claxton2 – 0 – 0 To Thomas Obear1 – 0 – 0 Day being extreme poor and unable to provide things of the committee to supply soldiers families. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Doctor Israel Woodberry fifteen pounds in full for the rent of his house which the Selectmen of this Town procured to put such persons in that should have the small pox in the natural way or such as have been greatly exposed, as also for all damages he sustained thereby to the tenth of March instant. The Town to be at all the charge of cleaning & white washing said house and make good all damages to Asa Woodberry which he has sustained by moving out of said house. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Doctor Israel Woodberry five pound ten shillings and four pence as per his account for doctor’s bills for several poor persons under the care of the Overseers. Viz. Ordered the Treasurer to pay widow Priscilla Woodberry 12/ for damages sustained by having the small pox moved into Daniel Woodberry’s house. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Benjamin Pickett 12/ for shaving John Martin the year past. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Andrew Dennis 7/3 it being for credit which ought to be given in the military tax in 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Moses Brown £ 10-0-0 being over taxed that sum by mistake in 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Nathan Leech twelve pound he being over taxed that sum in 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Capt. Thomas Davis £ 18-0-0 being over taxed that sum in 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Israel Thorndike £ 9-15-0 he being over taxed that sum in 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay the wid. Sarah Clark seventeen shillings of the Town’s money it being abatement of her soldier’s tax by reason of her husband dying in the army. Ordered the Treasurer to pay widow Judith Francis £ 2-19-7 abatement of her military tax in 1777 by reason of the loss of her husband in the army in the years 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Joseph Wood forty-seven pounds four shillings, it being in full for the following account. Joseph Wood presented the following account which was allowed. Viz.. To cash paid Doctor Israel Woodberry on account of Richard Searles, it being3-12-0 for said Searles nursing of Joseph Bradshaw and William Lovett four weeks when they were sick with the small pox in 1777. Isaac Chapman £ 16-6-10 it being in full for his account as followeth. viz. To two day’s making Highway tax. To going to Andover after guns, lead and sundry other things delivered out same. To carrying of barrel powder to Boxford that was borrowed. To 8 ½ days time spent in moving sundry persons that have got small pox and providing houses etc. To my account for sundries found and paid for four Lydia Patch when sick with the small pox etc. To my account for sundries found for Dane and Bradshaw when sick with the small pox. To my account for sundries found for Tamzon when sick with small pox. To my account of sundries for the wid. Anna Ellinwood and child when at the hospital with the small pox.
