1777-08-05th At a meeting of the Selectmen August 5 1777. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Mr. Isaac Thorndike £ 5.2.3 for the following particulars viz. for warning of 2 Town Meetings 0-6-0 for a [illegible] in his list 1-0-0 for abatement of the following taxes in his list viz. Isaac Chapman 3/11 died in the Army Jonathan Kant 2/8 moved out of town one Knowlton’s ditto 12/11 not belonging to Town Nathaniel Presson 12/7 died in the Army Joseph Pierce 16/7 extreme poor John Williams 3/10 extreme poor William Waddle 11/11 died in the Army Ammi Knowlton 1/10 highway tax he soldiering Ordered the Treasurer to pay Francis Smith twenty-nine shillings and eight pence 15/4 for Mr. [illegible] a coffin and 14/44 Bradshaw’s coffin they dying with the small pox. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Capt. Josiah Batchelder Jr. ten pounds fourteen shillings and ten pence. -8-0 for two bushels of corn for Miss Hales. 1-2-5 for hours & expense into Watertown for Seacoast men etc.. 4-13-4 for 2186 feet of plank board measure for the fort at Hovey’s. 0-18-4 for 5 wt. of cotton wool for clothing for John Martin. 3-0-0 for 1000 boards for barracks at the fort. 12-10 for 400 refuse boards for ditto. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Mr. Robert Dodge 191-13/8 of said some for abatement of his son’s poll tax not of age and the rest for [illegible] Ordered the Treasurer to pay Mr. [illegible] William Hazeltine three pounds nine shillings and four pence for the following abatements in his list viz. 1-0-0 Ezra Ellinwood rates turned Tory. -11-11 Robert Pickett extreme poor. 1-3-6 James Patch 2nd died in the Army. 0-12-11 4 Ebenezer Morse extreme poor. Ordered the Treasurer to pay wid. Hannah Elliott eight shillings in full for house rent for Benjamin Pickett till 3rd instant. I, the subscriber, do hereby covenant, promise and agree to and with the Selectmen of Beverly th to keep a grammar school in said Town for the Term of three months commencing on the 24 of Sept. last for the sum of twenty-four pounds, As witness my hand.
