1776-09-27th At a meeting of the Selectmen Sept. 27 1776 ordered the Town Clerk to issue out the following warrant for the calling of Town Meeting viz. Essex, ss. To Capt. Livermore Whittridge one of the Constables of the Town of Beverly. Greeting. In the name of the government and people of the State of Massachusetts Bay in New England you are required forthwith to notify and warn the male inhabitants of the Town of Beverly being free and twenty-one years of age and upwards to assemble and meet together on Monday the seventh day of October next at the usual place for holding Town meetings in said Town a three th o’clock afternoon for to act on a resolve of the Hon. House of Representatives of this state of the 17 instant viz. 1ly. To consider and determined whether they will give their consent that the present House of Representatives of this State of the Massachusetts Bay in New England together with the Council if they consent in one body with the House and by equal voice should consult, agree on and enact such a Constitution and form of government for this State as the said House of Representatives and Council as aforesaid on the fullest and most mature deliberation shall judge will most conduce to the safety, peace & happiness of this State in all after successions and generations and if they would direct that the same be made public for the inspection and perusal of the Inhabitants before the ratification thereof by the assembly etc. etc. 2ly. To see if it be the mind of the Town to have the Fort at Woodberry’s Point enclosed as also to build or provide some barracks in said Fort for the reception of the soldiers stationed in this Town and for to act anything relative thereto that they may think necessary. Hereof fail not but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon to the Selectmen at or th before said time by order of the Selectmen of Beverly Sept. 27 1776. Joseph Wood, T. Clerk.
