1775-03-10At a meeting of the Selectmen March 10th.1775. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Nehemiah Smith four pound nineteen shillings for boarding & nursing of Susannah Ellinwood ten weeks at his house and for extraordinary charge and trouble when she lay at his house and sundry clothing found for the child and necessary found her when laid in as per agreement. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Gideon Putnam 17/2 for labor and glass on and for the School House in the upper parish. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Daniel Twiss 6/8 for two day’s work on shingling the School house in the upper parish. Ordered the Treasurer to pay William Obear six pound thirteen shillings and four pence for keeping District school in the Farm ward this winter past. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Jonathan Dodge 7/10 for extraordinary charge and labor done on the highway as surveyor. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Jonathan Conant eight shillings for extraordinary charge as surveyor on the Highways in the year 1773 by him then forgot to be exhibited. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Benjamin Beckford twenty-eight shillings and 7 abatement of his town tax by reason of his loss at sea. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Dr. Israel Woodberry three pounds nineteen shillings and five pence in full to this day for doctors bill for sundry poor persons that are under the care of the Overseers of the Poor as per agreement. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Joseph Baker eight pound eleven shillings and five pence in full for the expense of the Committee of Correspondence of this Town to this day. At the same meeting of the Selectmen Joseph Wood presented the following account viz.. & allowed. The town of Beverly per 1774 June to cash paid Mark Morse£ 0..12..0 1775 Feb. 17th. to cash paid Mark Morris0..7..10 to recording of taxes returned by the surveyor of the highway and making out list of the same to the Constables and making out warrants to collect same period0..6..0 to [illegible] for the use of the town0..8..0 to time spent in taking care of the Poor0..2..6 to my fee as town clerk2..10..0 Mar. to cash paid Jonathan Bartlett for house rent for William Hale.0..2..6 Cont. credit£ 4..8..10 1774 April by cash received of Richard Ober for wood sold to Martha Thissell to Jona. Larcom.2..5 by cash received of Jonathan Harris for one cord of wood sold of said Martha which she had of Jeffery for year 177313..4 by cash received of Ebenezer Ellinwood for the smoke house0..16..0 by 33 pound of mean Pork left in my hand by the Selectmen0..8..10 foot of credit2..0..7 balance due to wood2..8..3 Ordered the Treasurer to pay Joseph Wood two pound eight shillings and three pence for the balance of the above account. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Joseph Baker two pound twelve shillings and four pence in full for the expense of the Selectmen and Town meeting to this day. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Dea. Caleb Wallis two pound thirteen shillings and five pence 11/ shillings of said sum for apportioning and making of the highway tax 2 3/4 quarter days, 10/ for 2 ½ days making of Town and Province tax 4/ for taking care of the Poor 1/10 for men being shoes for John Martin 5/ for time spent in getting the French naturals away 7/ for time spent in laying out highway at Josiah Trow’s Frost Fish Brook and at Obear Cove so-called 4/ for sundry services done for the town 10/7 for sundry provisions found for William Hale’s family by order of the Selectmen. Ordered the Treasurer to pay Mr. Richard Obear two pound eight shillings and two pence 12/ for 3 days apportioning and making of the highway tax 7/8 for time spent in putting out the Poor and appraising their clothing an taking care of the Poor to this day six shillings for hauling of Medlish’s things to Salem to go to Quebec 6/ for time spent in laying out a way from Josiah Trow’s and to Obear Cove and at Frost Fish Brook & 12/ for making of Town and Province taxes 3 days 4/6 for repairs done on the school house for glass etc. Ordered the Treasurer to pay James Obear forty-two shillings and eight pence for the abatement of sundry persons rates in his list as followeth viz. for Jacob Elow’s tax 0..5..10 absconded Robert Bradford 5..10 drowned Benjamin Black 3..9 under poor circumstances Issacher Obear 6..2 lost at sea Nehemiah Presson jr. 7..5 not belonging to the Town Andrew Standley 7..3 lost at sea David Williams 7..3 lost at sea £ 2..2..8 Ordered the Treasurer to pay William Langdell two pound four shilling and eight pence 5/of said sum for putting out the Poor and appraising their clothing 11/ for 3 days apportioning and making the highway tax 6/ for one & half day in laying out a way from Josiah Trow’s and to Obear Cove so-called and Frost Fish Brook 8/ for two days making Town and Province tax 4/ for time spent about Thomas Cleaves funeral 6/8 for a shirt, cap and handkerchief to lay out said Thomas Cleaves with 4/ for sundry services done for the town. Ordered the Treasurer to pay wid. Mary Wittridge two pound three shillings and two pence 39/8 of said sum is for keeping of Thomas Cleaves his third quarter and eight days as per agreement 3/6 together with what was sufficient in the clothing is in full for all charge of nursing and laying out and so forth of Thomas Cleaves when at died at her house.
