1892-11-16 Election Recount At a legal meeting of the Selectmen of the town of Beverly held at the Town Hall in said
town on Wednesday the sixteenth day of November in the year one thousand eight hundred and
ninety-two pursuant to certain petitions often or more qualified voters in each of the several voting
precincts in said town stating that they have reason to believe that the returns of votes cast in said
town of Beverly for candidates for governor on the eighth day of November, 1892, are erroneous,
in that fewer votes were counted for William H. Haile then were cast for said Haile, and that more
votes were counted for William E. Russell then were cast for said Russell, requesting a recount of
the votes cast for the said William H. Haile and William E. Russell, it appearing that each of the
candidates above named had been duly notified of the time and place of holding the said meeting and
Elbridge C. Sawyer appeared for the said William H. Haile, and William Stopford appeared for the
said William E. Russell.
And the said Selectmen did then and there open each of the envelopes containing the ballots
cast at the several voting precincts, separately, and did examine the ballots therein contained and did
determine that the ballots so cast at the election aforesaid for the said William H. Haile and for the
said William E. Russell, for candidates for Govemor, were as follows namely;
For Precinct Number One.
William H. Haile of Springfield, ninety votes
William E. Russell of Cambridge, seventy-four votes
For Precinct Number Two.
William H. Haile of Springfield, one hundred and sixty votes
William E. Russell of Cambridge, eighty votes
For Precinct Number Three.
William H. Hailc of Springfield, two hundred and ninety-two votes
William E. Russell of Cambridge, one hundred and fifty-three votes
For Precinct Number Four.
William H. Haile of Springfield, three hundred and twenty votes
William E. Russell of Cambridge, one hundred and eighty votes
For Precinct Number Five.
William H. Haile of Springfield, two hundred and twenty five votes
William E. Russell of Cambridge, two hundred twenty-five votes
And there having been no petitions for recounting the ballots cast for any other person for
Governor, the said Selectmen deem that the returns of the several precinct officers are correct and
do hereby make the following as the correct return of votes cast for the candidates for Governor at
the election aforesaid.
