Bowen called the meeting to order at 7:OOpm.
Members present: Steven Crowley, Danielle Spang, Hannah Bowen
Others present: Public Services Director Michael Collins
Conversation about Snow and Ice Management
Committee members and Public Services Director Michael Collins spoke together about
sidewalk clearing,plowing, parking bans and pre-treating or salting the roads. There was
discussion about the ordinance that requires property owners to clear the sidewalk in front of
their property. There was also discussion about the challenges of street corners where snow is
pushed onto the sidewalk by plows. Collins spoke to the change in inspections for commercial
trucks and the increasing costs of insurance for snow plow drivers. There was some discussion
about outreach for those who need assistance or others who are willing to volunteer. Spang noted
that the Council on Aging has a list of people who need help with clearing snow. There was
discussion about particularly challenging areas, such as Wentworth Drive, which was brought
forward by a constituent. Bowen highlighted the value of passing on institutional knowledge
such as specific areas of the city that have custom directions or are challenging to plow. There
was more general discussion on plowing and how specific challenging areas are addressed.
