BOD 9-12-2023 Meeting Minutes Beverly Council on Aging Advisory Board Minutes

Place: BCOA and Senior Center, Colon Street

Meeting Called to order: 2:30 p.m.

Discussion regarding Senior Day in the Park
Event was essentially break-even financially, with $200 made. Consensus was that the event
went very well. Positive comments regarding staging area. Consideration of lowering ticket
prices for next year. Water from jugs tasted like plastic, but avoided use of plastic bottles. It was
noted that compostable tableware etc. is very expensive.
Director's Report
Administration and Finances
YTD budget reviewed
Chris reported that an application for a $100K grant is underway for Hybrid programming which
offers Older Adults programs available both in person and virtually.
Discussion regarding ongoing issues with buses, and that on one day the center was down to only
one functional bus. Chris put in a request to consider the purchase of a hybrid minivan, which
would have more versatility for usage.
Programs and Events
Upcoming programs included full body low intensity workout class run by Juliana of HIIT
Queen Fitness.
The Swimsuit poster board event was a success and enjoyed by many. This was followed by
making Hawaiian ice cream.
Sept 13'h there is a luau with a DJ. Other events planned are Big Band, a trip to the Pirate
Museum, a "Root" lunch and a trip to Kowloon's Restaurant.
There were comments about how well the monthly spotlight on Africa went in August. The
Spotlight program is going well and October is Hispanic Heritage Month. .
We are continuing to increase our day trips and transportation access.
Meetings/Activities/Clients/Clients of Concern
The LGBTQ discussion group will continue, with hopes for better attendance.
Amanda and Claire will be hosting a "Ted"talk, later in September, "Confronting the Painful
U.S. History"
Two clients of concern were mentioned. One who due to a history of aggressive behaviors may
need to be asked not to come to the center, and another who no longer has the capability to safely
participate in trips without a companion.
Personnel Updates/New Business
New bus driver Peter, began working 8/31 as a permanent part time driver. He had been a
temporary driver over the summer.
The front desk coordinator position was offered to someone who has "roots" in Beverly
When this position is filled, the Senior Center will be fully staffed.

New Business
The Policy regarding Beverly Council on Aging Grants, known as the Grant Program was
distributed for review. Board members were asked to consider if it still reflected the intent of the
program, and if there were any changes that might be recommended. Discussion to follow at
next meeting
Brief discussion of the need for new board members. Note that the Mayor may still have some
individuals in mind
Next Meeting: It was identified that both Blair Smith(away) and Chris Gomez (at training) are
unable to attend the meeting on October 3, 2023, so it was agreed to move the next board
meeting to Tuesday, October 10 at 2:30 p.m.
