February 2020 Veterans Council Meeting MinutesJerry Guilebbe called the meeting to order at 5:00pm. Veterans council members present: Jerry Guilebbe, President Charles “Buddy” Rehal, Vice President Susan Moran Bob Laws Paul Weinberg Paul Lantz Corey Paulette Chuck Clark Donnie O’Connor Advisory members and guests: Joaney Gallagher, Rainforest Reptiles Shows Reading and Approval of the Minutes Paul Weinberg made a motion to have the minutes sent to all council members and approve them at the March meeting. Motion was seconded and carried. Financial Report The current balance in the account is $12,771.11. Corey Paulette made a motion to accept the financial report. Motion was seconded and carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Emergency payments for local veteran – A local veteran approached David Perinchief for assistance due to a domestic violence situation. The veteran was placed in a hotel for one night. The cost of the hotel was $121.76. She is also seeking money to have her car fix for one night at hotel & $657.46 to fix her car so she can go to her appointments in Bedford and Boston. David is trying to get Chapter 115 for her. Paul Weinberg made a motion to pay the balances for the veteran. Motion was seconded and carried. Veterans Cookout Update – The veterans cookout will be held on July 31, 2020. The cost to have Phantom Gourmet hold the event at Lynch Park will be $13,000.00. There will be food vendors and beer distributors. Patrons will need to purchase tickets to the event. There will also be vendors for veterans such as the VA, healthcare, and acupuncture. The council will try to get Kristine Babcock from North Shore Community College. The Air Force Band and Rainforest Reptile Shows will be present for entertainment. There was confusion around how this event would support Beverly veterans. The discussion was put on hold until the council can get clarification from David Perinchief. Rainforest Reptiles Shows will present a show or have animals out for handling. They are leaving it up to the council. This will be a free event with no cost to the veterans council. NEW BUSINESS Vietnam Veterans Day – The official day is March 29 but it will be celebrated on Saturday, March 28 @ 10am at Beverly Hospital. A wreath will be placed and then everyone will reassemble at Vietnam Veterans Plaza. Memorial Day – This year Memorial Day will be May 25. Discussion was held about having a pancake breakfast for veterans. Jerry Guilebbe hopes that this will attract younger veterans. The pancake breakfasts at the Vittori Rocci Post are held on the last Sunday of the month (5/31/20). Buddy Rehal suggested having the veterans sign-in and at the end of the breakfast the veterans council will pay for their breakfasts. The sign-in sheet can have a place for the veterans email so that the council can reach out to them. Good of the Order – Buddy Rehal presented an idea to have the City of Beverly offer free parking to veterans with Purple Heart license plates. After a brief discussion it was decided that with the new parking kiosks there would be no way to distinguish Purple Heart license plates from regular license plates. Adjournment – Paul Weinberg made a motion to adjourn. Motion was seconded and carried.
