August 2020 Veterans Council Meeting MinutesJerry Guilebbe called the meeting to order at 5:00pm. Veterans council members present: Jerry Guilebbe, President Charles “Buddy” Rehal, Vice President Susan Moran David Perinchief Bob Laws Paul Weinberg Cory Paulette Chuck Clark Advisory members and guests: Jan Pierce Reading and Approval of the Minutes Cory Paulette made a motion to amend the July 2020 minutes. He would like the mention of additional funding to be removed. Chuck Clark would like the minutes to be amended to change Cabot Street to Essex Street. Motion was seconded and carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Veterans Day – The Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Vietnam Veterans Memorial - Jerry Guilebbe has spoken to Philip Klimowicz, the forestry and grounds foreman for the City of Beverly. Phil does not want to cut down a live tree. It was suggested that the tree be moved to another location, but the tree could still die. Jerry will talk to Phil again and include Mayor Cahill. As of today, the curb has still not been cut. Jerry spoke to Chelsea Sams from Montserrat College of Art. She gave him the app for the memorial. Jerry will forward it to all members of the council. Middle School Plaques – The walls have been reinforced and the plaques should be up before the children return to school. Jan Pierce suggested having a presentation for the plaques so that the children in the school will know what meaning of the plaques. This is not possible currently due to the covid pandemic. NEW BUSINESS Council Charter – Paul Weinberg would like a copy of the veteran’s council charter. David Perinchief is going to send an email to Lisa Kent, the City Clerk, to obtain a copy of the charter. According to the Veterans Advisory Committee Ordinance, the committee shall consist of 13 total members. Buddy Rehal suggested having anyone interested in joining the council, submit a letter of interest. Good of the Order – Ron Genest announced that the American Legion is back open. Their hours are Thurs. 3-9pm, Fri. & Sat. 12-9pm, and Sun. 12-7pm. The legion has been remodeled and they are practicing social distancing. There will also be a 9-hole golf tournament on September 14, 2020. They are looking for sponsorships for the holes. Cory Paulette made a motion for the council to use council funds to sponsor a hole for the tournament. The motion was seconded and carried. Buddy Rehal made a motion to recognize Kowalski Dental with a certificate for their support and care of veterans. Paul Weinberg suggested that the recognition should come from Mayor Cahill with the support of the veteran’s council. Cory Paulette recommended that the certificate be presented at the Veterans Day ceremony. Motion was seconded and carried. Cory Paulette brought it to the council’s attention that the memorial at Independence Park needed to be cleaned. David Perinchief said he and Ken McKay would have it cleaned by Memorial Day. David Perinchief informed the council that Ken McKay now has a workshop at North Beverly Cemetery. It will soon be fully functioning. The workshop will help with restoration of the graves and plaques. He is looking into a CPA Grant to fund it. David will send a list of needed items to all the council members. Per Bob Laws, the Elks performed a Flag Day ceremony for the city. The ceremony was held outside. Adjournment – Bob Laws made a motion to adjourn. Motion was seconded and carried.
