1996-05-20ELEMENTARY FACILITY BUILDING COMMISSION MINUTES
A meeting of the Elementary Facilities Building Commission was held on
Monday, May 20, 1996 at 12:00 noon at the Briscoe Middle School in the School
Committee room. Present were Nancy Levin, Mike Lauranzano, Michele Gordon,
DPW Commissioner George Zambouras, Judy Mulligan and Jearme Kuespert of
ERF+A. Jearme K. handed out an agenda.
Westin and Sampson, the Geotechnical conultant, has questions regarding the type
of foundation suitable for the new school based on initial findings. They want to do
additional borings and tests at a cost of $3200 to evaluate the suitability of a shallow
foundation with slab on grade versus the much more expensive (50-60k) wood
piles with structural floor slab. Mike Lauranzano made a motion, Nancy seconded,
to authorize that $3200 be spent for additional testing by Westin and Sampson.
Voted 2-0.
George Z. spoke in regard to the construction contract. The arbitration clause must
be deleted to comply with city ordinance and it needs to be determined who should
carry Builder's Risk insurance, the city or the contractor. He also had issues with
the design of the drainage at North Beverly. The addition will affect off-site
drainage. Can this be fixed during construction? Is there a possibility of a state grant
to address this issue?
The SGESSS cheddist was reviewed. The format of the City Council vote on the
bond authorization was questioned but general consensus is that it is OK. There
was an update on the status of the land acquisition for the new school.
Proprietary votes were discussed for LCN door closers, Von Duprin panic
hardware and Collins & Aikman carpet. The votes will be taken at the next meeting
which will be held on Monday, June 10, 1996 at 12:00 noon at the Briscoe Middle
School.
Respectfully submitted,
Judith A. Mulligan
