The meeting was called to order at 7:30 a.m.
The Board reviewed and accepted the minutes of the October 30, 2003 meeting.
Joyce Redford, North Shore Tobacco Control Program Director, informed the Board that six bars
in Beverly were inspected on November 13, 2003 between 10:30 a.m. and midnight. Bars
checked were Goat Hill Grille, Sports Page Pub, .Pickled Onion, Lighthouse, Brothers Pub, and
Press Box. People were found smoking on the deck at Kitty O'Shea's. No violation was given
because of confusion over outdoor deck. At Brothers Pub, half of the patrons were smoking,
ashtrays were on the bar and it was clear that they were ignoring the regulation. They will be
fined $100.00.
The Board discussed the exterior deck smoking. Although there is no service to the deck by
employees, the potential problem may arise at another time. Mr. Alpine motioned that portions of
the establishment under the control of the ownership should be smokefree. Seconded by Mr.
Walsh, vote unanimous.
Mr. Burke updated the Board on the November13th Flu Clinic. Only 150 persons took advantage
of shots. The week before 50 doses were given to Police and Fire employees. Pat Zingariello is
contemplating a 'last chance' clinic for the public in a few weeks.
The Mass. Health Officers Conference was held the first week of November. Mr. Burke, Pat
Zingariello and Diane Kurkjian all attended some of the programs.
Mr. Burke has asked Phil Klimowicz of the Parks Department to speak at our December Board
meeting. The Regional meeting is set for January 15, 2004 and he is trying to find a guest speaker
informed about RDNA. He will request staff from New England Biolabs.
The Health department is still collecting memury thermometers and thermostats. Also,
fluorescent bulbs will be accepted. Mr. Burke signed a letter for the Board and forwarded to Dr.
Block of Swarnpscott Board of Health to be submitted at a public forum..
Some new issues for the department will be regulating wells in the city. Roland Adams of the
Engineering Department has been very helpful with maps (GIS).
Mr. Walsh informed the Board and Director he had been contacted by neighbor of lots 49-50
Sonning Road who are concerned with plans for a sub-division. Mr. Walsh stated that the parcels
had once been used as a short-term dumping area in the 1950's.
The next scheduled meeting is December 18, 2003 at the Senior Center at 7:30 A.M.
Meeting adjourned at 8:35 a.m.
Respectfully submitted
