2002-10-24City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Board of Health Subcommittee: Date: October 24, 2002 Place: Beverly Council on Aging, Arts & Crafts Room Board members present: Frank S. Carbone Jr., MD, Joseph W. Walsh Jr., and William J. Alpine Jr. Board members absent: Others present: William Burke, Director of Public Health, Tom Scully, Director of Community Services, Peter A. Hersee, resigning Board Member and Mayor Thomas Crean Recorder: Judith Balboni Chairman Carbone opened the meeting at 7:35 a.m. He began by welcoming Mr. William J. Alpine Jr. to the Board. Mr. Alpine will be replacing Mr. Peter A. Hersee who resigned after l2 years of service. Chairman Carbone praised Mr. Hersee for his support on the Board and assured him his presence will be missed. Mayor Thomas Crean presented Mr. Hersee with a "Hannah" plate on behalf of the City of Beverly for his dedication on the Board of Health since January 1990. Mr. Hersee was also given a 'bag of treats' from the Health Department. Coffee and pastry were served. The minutes of the regular monthly meeting on September 26, 2002 were reviewed and accepted. Mr. Burke updated the board on several issues. A regional meeting of Boards of Health was held here at the Senior Center on October 17, 2002. Discussion of ETS updates, regulation status and other regional issues were some things on the agenda. The annual Flu Clinic was held on October 19th. 750 doses were administered. A second clinic will be held in the next few weeks. The first clinic was restricted to age 65 and older, and will not be the case for the second. Providers will be receiving their second and final allotment of vaccine shortly. Plans are going forward for Community Wellness Day scheduled for April 5, 2003. Mr. Burke and Ms. Zingarielio are meeting with representatives from Beverly Hospital today. Mr. Hersee speaking in behalf of Rotary Club will lend support as they have done for many years in the past. We will also be looking for additional sponsors. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day has been scheduled for April 26, 2003 at Beverly This summer, Mingo Beach had to be closed due to elevated levels of bacteria in water samples taken, it has been determined, that the cause is a leaky 100-year old sewer line located at nearby Endicott College. Endicott has done some work on problem and will continue to investigate the problem. Beach sampling will be conducted at the conclusion of this work.
