A special meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Tuesday, January 2, 2001,
at the Beverly High School Library, Beverly, MA.
Members Present: Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Brusil, Mrs. Coburn,
Mr. McHugh, Mrs. Norris and Mr. Cahill.
Members Absent: Mayor Scanlon.
Also in Attendance: William Lupini, Superintendent of Schools,
Judy DeLucia, Assistant Superintendent,
James Hayes, Assistant Superintendent,
Judy Mulligan, School Business Manager, and
Steven Cottle, Student Representative.
President Bill Cahill called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mrs. Norris.
Mr. Cahill stated the purpose of the meeting as primarily two-fold:
1) Update on School Committee Goals and
Annual Report of School Committee President
2) Discuss Report of The National Commission on Math and Science,
"Before It's Too Late".
Annual Report of School Committee President
Mr. Cahill presented the Annual Report of the Committee President, indicating progress
on School Committee Goals and major steps to be taken in 2001. (See attached.)
School Committee Goals
Discussion was held on each of the four goals, focusing on steps to be taken in 2001.

Superintendent Lupini offered a 5 goal, which he requested the Committee consider,
that of engaging in a systems-thinking/visioning for the district, and to establish what
the School Committee and the community view as indicators of success. Further
consideration will be held at a retreat or special meeting in the near future.
The School Committee Goals will be revised, incorporating steps to be taken, along
with additions from the discussion this evening. The revised list will be disseminated
to members later this week.

A short video was shown and discussion on the video and report was held.
Joe Clement, Academic Division Leader for Math, Science and Technology was
invited to participate in the discussion.
The meeting adjourned at 9:05 PM.
