2001-04-25BEVERLY PUBLIC SCHOOLS BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS April 25, 2001 A Special Meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 in the Administrative Conference Room at the Briscoe Middle School, Members Present: Ms. Bell, Ms. Brusil, Mr. Cahill, Ms. Coburn, Ms. Norris, Mayor Scanlon Members Absent: Mr. McHugh Also Present: Dr. William Lupini, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jim Hayes, Assistant Superintendent Ms. Elaine Paradis, Athletic Director Mr. William Foye, Principal, Beverly High School President Cahill called the meeting to order at 7:50 PM. Mr. Cahill slated that the purpose of the meeting was to bring forth the recommendation that had been voted by. the Curriculum, Instruction and Student Life Subcommittee. The Subcommittee had voted to approve the recommendation of the school administration regarding graduation requirements. That recommendation included a Wellness Program which required students, beginning with the graduating class of 2005, to complete 10 credits of Wellness (health & P.E.) courses. Students would be allowed to take an independent study coume to earn 2.5 credits and could be wiaved from 2.5 credits for participating in 2 seasons of school sports. Ms. Brusil made a motion that the graduation requirements be adopted with a change to 5 credits instead of 10 with no option for waivers. The motion was seconded by Ms. Bell. Dr. Lupini stated that the committee had never brought forth a motion that was different from one that had been voted by a subcommittee. Mayor Scanlon expressed that a compromise might be a 7.5 credit requirement Ms. Brusil amended her original motion to state that wa accept the proposed graduation requirements, beginning with the graduating class of 2005, with a 7.5 credit requirement in Wellness (instead of 10 credits) and that 2.5 credits could be waived through participation in two seasons of school sports, with no option for completing an · independent study to satisfy any of the Wellness credits. The motion was seconded by Ms. Bell. · The motion passed by a 4-2 margin, Ms. Norris and Mr. Cahill voting in opposition. Dr. Lupini stated that as we had not considered the recommendation of the Curriculum, Instruction and Student Life Subcommittee, the administration will · implement the requirement, with objection.
