2000-06-23BEVERLY PUBLIC SCHOOLS BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS June 23, 2000 A special meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Friday, June 23, 2000, in the School Committee Room, Briscoe Middle School, Beverly, MA. Members Present: Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Brusil, Mrs. Coburn, Mr. McHugh, Mrs. Norris, Mayor Scanlon and Mr. Cahill. Members Absent: None Also in Attendance: William Lupini, Superintendent of Schools, and Mrs. Judy Mulligan, School Business Manager. President Cahill called the meeting to order at 7:08 PM. FY01 SCHOOL DEPARTMENT BUDGET · It was moved by Mrs. Brusil and seconded to accept the FY2001 Proposed Budget Adjustments (Fifth Draft dated June 14, 2000) as presented by the Administration, and adopt the FY2001 School Department Budget in the amount of $34,576,056. A roll call vote on the motion resulted in the following: YES: Mrs. Norris, Mayor ScanIon, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Brusil, Mrs. Coburn, Mr. McHugh and Mr. Cahill. NO: None Unanimously voted. Superintendent Lupini stated that if he has the ability to do any restorations at a later date, it will be to hire additional high school teachers, as may be necessary to fulfill graduation requirements, as well as address other issues at Beverly High School, including technology and hall monitors. Job Description · It was moved by Mrs. Norris and seconded to accept the job description for "Academic Division Leader for Mathematics, Science and Technology, Grades 9-12" as presented by the Administration. It was moved by Mrs. Norris and seconded to amend the motion by changing # 10 on the job description to read "...may be required to teach up to two periods... ", and include the wording "integrating technology into the curriculum..", consistent with other recently approved job descriptions. The motion, as amended, was unanimously approved. Special Meeting June 23, 2000 Page 2 Early Redistricting Requests Superintendent Lupini stated that 19 students have applied for "early redistricting" per the conditions specified in the adopted "Administration Recommendation on Redistricting Transition". All but two of the requests can be honored and notification to parents will be completed by June 30. Elementary Redistricting Plan Superintendent Lupini recommended, at the regular meeting held June 20, 2000, that no further modifications be made to the Elementary Redistricting Plan. School Committee members agreed to request that the Administration again review the criteria and numbers related to moving students from "Neighborhood X' and the "Central Cemetery" neighborhood. Mr. Lupini reaffirmed the recommendation made at the June 20th meeting. President Cahill summarized the concerns surrounding a request that the School Committee make a technical correction to the Redistricting Plan. Comments and statements were heard from parents in "Neighborhood X" and "Central Cemetery", as well as members who served on the Elementary Redistricting Committee. Mr. Cahill entertained a motion regarding reconsideration of the Redistricting Plan. No motion was brought forward and the Redistricting Plan will not be reopened. Superintendent Lupini will respond to the "early redistricting" requests by June 30th, and the "stay put" requests by September 30th, as outlined in the Redistricting Transition Plan. The next regular School Committee meeting will be held Monday, August 28, 2000, at 7:00 PM, at the Beverly High School Library. Janet Norris Secretary
