1998-09-03BEVERLY PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION Minutes of meeting held September 3, 1998 Present:. Bruce Doig, Kevin Hobin, Ivy Mahan, Dave Gardner, Liz Caputo, AL Churchill, Joan Fairbank, Mike Papamechail and Phil Klimowicz. Minutes of previous meeting were accepted as written. Bruce asked Mr. Papamechail about the Cedar St. area that was paved for skating. Presently there are holes and grass growing through. Asked if it would be usable this year. Mike will look at the site and see what can be done. Discussed progress at Colgate. Equipment has been delivered to DPW. Mr. Morris has been able to get many items donated. Question of property ownership has been resolved. Conservation Commission must be consulted about placement of equipment in relation to the pond. DIRECTOR'S REPORT Discussed the need for signs at all playstructure stating appropriate ages for use and the need for children to be supervised at all times. Received a call from Lothrop St. area residents group (Mackaral Cove Assoc.) concerned about fencing planned for Dane St. Beach. Neighbors do not want chain link. There is a possibility that they can get fencing donated. Joan has an appointment to meet with her and discuss options. Discussed article in the newspaper regarding Walgreen's donation of $10,000 to Centerville School for playground equipment. Bertucci's donation to the new McKeown School for playground equipment was also discussed. Commission discussed writing to the Superintendent, the City Council, as well as, others expressing their desire to be included in decisions regarding new playground equipment being installed anywhere in the city. Discussed situation at Vittori Park that came up at the last meeting. It was recommended that a letter be written to Peter Gilmore with a copy to the Chief of Police, stating that the assistance of the Police Dept is necessary to handle these types of situations. Discussed a problem that arose over the summer at the Hannah Park. The YMCA monopolized the field space there for their day camp group. They did not have a permit. It interfered with the park program. Bruce will bring up the situation at his next meeting with the YMCA. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Gail Carmody Recreation Dept.
