Parking and Traffic Commission
Thursday, August 6, 1998
Members present: Traffic Sergeant Dennis Tarsook, Fire Captain Bruce Palmer, Chamber of
Commerce representative John Trefrey, City Planner Tina Cassidy. Also present: Edwin Gless
from Atlantic Design Engineers, Inc. and Bernard Shadrawy, Shadrawy & Rabinovitz.
Cassidy calls the meeting to order at 1:45 p.m. She explains to those present that the purpose
of the meeting is to review a revised site plan for a proposed Walgreen's store at the coruer of
Rantoul and Elliott Streets. The corporation has negotiated to purchase an abutting property at
the coruer of Roundy Street, and a revised site plan has been submitted to the Planning Board
for approval. Under the site plan review section of the City's zoning ordinance, this Commission
must review the plan and formulate a recommendation for the Planning Board's consideration.
Ed Gless introduces himself to the commission and explains the nature of the revisions. The
southeru-most driveway on Rantoul Street will be relocated approximately eighteen feet further
south toward Roundy Street to increase the distance between it and the intersection of Rantoul
and Elliott Streets. Eight additional parking spaces will be added to the site, and Walgreen's has
opted to relocate the position of the trash receptacle from the previous location on the Roundy
Street lot line to the back of the proposed building. A compactor will be used instead of a
dumpstcr, and will be enclosed by a brick and metal gate structure to screen it from abutting
properties.
Cassidy asks if a rendering of the compactor enclosure is available. Shadrawy submits a detail
plan showing the materials and dimensions of the enclosure for the commission' s review. Palmer
and Tarsook question whether any changes to the traffic flow patterns or driveways are being
requested. Shadrawy and Gless state that there are no proposed changes in this regard; outside
of the amendments listed in the paragraph above, all other aspects of the previously-approved site
plan will remain unchanged. Tarsook asks Shadrawy how long he expects construction of the
site will take. Shadrawy answers approximately three months.
Following this discussion. members vote to inform the Planning Board that the Commission finds
the amended site plan acceptable to the members.
