2000-05-23City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: May 23, 2000 7:00 P.M. Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Diane Costa, Edward Brindle, Katherine Fanning, Neil Olson, Kevin O'Reilly, Joanne Panunzio, and John Young Board members absent: Lindsay Diehl, Helga Senko Others present: Thomas Scully, Anna Langstaff Recorder: Anna Langstaff John Young presided. Neil Olson made the motion, seconded by Diane Costa, to accept the minutes of April 25, 2000 as read. Motion passed. Public Presentation None Committee Reports Personnel: Neil Olson will contact Lindsay Diehl about the director's evaluation. Administration: No report. Finance: No report. Long Range Planning: No report. Report of the Library Director 1) Copies of the Director's report (on file with these minutes) were mailed to Trustees. 2) Budget: Tom Scully distributed copies of the revised library budget. The Mayor reduced the part time salary account by $20,000, but he did not change the supply, maintenance, or book accounts. There will be a budget hearing before the city council on Monday, June 12 8:00 P.M. Edward Brindle proposed that at the September Board meeting the Trustees formally agree to accept the final budget as submitted by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. Discussion followed. 3) Poetry Contest: John Young reported on Young Adult Poetry Contest. 4) MLA Conference: John Young reported on John and Tom's panel discussion on libraries and the interact at the MLA conference. 5) Archives Course: Wrap-up ceremony for archives class is May 25. 6) Pesce Family Donation: Anna Pesce's family wants to make a donation to the Farms in her memory. The mount they are thinking of giving is not enough to cover the landscape plan or even a plaque. This may become a sensitive issue. Communications None Unfinished Business 1) Interact policy: Interact policy will be reviewed at the June meeting. New Business 1) Band Concert: Band Concert on the Common Wednesday, July 5, 6:30-8 P.M. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Library) The next regular meeting of the Board will be Tuesday, June 27, 2000 at 7:00 P.M. at the Farms Branch Library. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:45 P.M. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT May 23, 2000 Beverly Farms Library - We have received a pledge of $100,000 for technology at the Farms Library. The money will be received at the rate of $10,000 per year over ten years. The anonymous donor asks that we also link our technology plans to the schools. The Building Committee has hired Clara Batcheler of CBA in Brookline as the Farms landscape architect. We are in the process of completing a contract. Massachusetts Library Assn. - John Young and I spoke at the Massachusetts Library Association Spring convention in Hyannis. We were on a panel with a Trustee and Library Director from Sturbridge to discuss library Interact use policies. Young Adult Poetry Contest - On April 27th, the Library hosted an awards ceremony for the 4th Annual Young Adult poetry contest in honor of Alex Nelson. One hundred seventy five poems were submitted. Budget - The Mayor has submitted the budget to the City Council. $20,000 was cut from the Part Time salary account, but the other accounts were left untouched. The City Council's target for completing budget work is June 15 and we will have our hearing before them sometime before that.
