John Young called the meeting of the Long Range Planning Committee to order.
Tom Scully presented the Action Plan for 2004.
Lindsay Diehl raised a question about including the issue of patron and staff safety in the Library’s
Long Range Plan. Discussion ensued about the issue of security in the Library.
Tom Scully stated that the issue of security was also on the agenda for the regular Board meeting to
follow the Long Range Planning Committee meeting.
Lindsay argued that the security issues need to be written into a plan to ensure that there is follow
through. Some Board members felt that there wasn’t sufficient money to implement some of the
security measures. Several Board members also felt that security was such a fundamental part of
Library operations that it did not need to be written into the Long Range Plan.
John Young suggests that discussion be continued at the next Board meeting and a decision be made
then as to how and whether to incorporate security issues in the action plan. Neil Olson asked if that
means that a vote on the entire Action Plan will be deferred. John Young said that it does.
Motion: Lindsay Diehl moves that discussion of the Action Plan be tabled to the next meeting. So
voted.
John Young adjourned the Long Range Planning Committee meeting.
Respectfully submitted.
Thomas F. Scully,
Library Director
