2001-08-29City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Long Range Planning Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2001 7:00 P.M. Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Diane Costa, Neil Olson, Helga Senko, and John Young Board members absent: Edward Brindle, Lindsay Diehl, Katherine Fanning, Joanne Panunzio, Kevin O’Reilly Others present: Thomas Scully, Anna Langstaff, Janice Preston, Kate Ingalls Recorder: Anna Langstaff The Long Range Planning Committee and Citizen Advisory Committee met to discuss the long range plan. Tom Scully presented a draft of goals and objectives (on file with these minutes). Tom Scully will post revised draft on the library’s website. The next meeting of the Long Range Planning Committee will be Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at 6:30 PM at the Main Library. The next meeting of the full Board will be Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at 7:00 PM at the Main Library. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 P.M. BEVERLY PUBLIC LIBRARY LONG RANGE PLAN Mission Statement The Beverly Public Library provides services, programs and materials that enrich people's lives, foster a love of reading and provide access to information. These services may be provided from among our own resources, by networking with other libraries or by providing gateway access to the world of information resources beyond our walls. The library advocates for access to the world of ideas and information unrestricted by fees, censorship, language or barriers to the disabled. 2001 LONG RANGE PLAN Outline of Goals and Objectives Goal: To make library services equally accessible to all members of the community Objectives: 1.Make library buildings barrier free •Work with the School Department to maximize accessibility of school libraries where possible •Provide bookmobile service to neighborhoods without a library •Expand electronic remote accessing of library resources •Make available materials in foreign languages •Make available materials in formats useable by the visual and hearing impaired •Work with the City Clerk and other departments to make public documents accessible Goal: To develop a community of citizens who have the literacy skills needed in today’s society Objectives: •Work with the schools to promote reading and literacy •Conduct and/or provide facilities for literacy programs •Sponsor events which enhance the reading experience of children and adults Goal: To instill a love of reading in young people. Objectives: •Develop programs to promote a love of reading •Provide information for parents to develop in their children a life long interest in reading Goal: To provide programs that enrich the cultural and educational life of the community Objectives: •Sponsor cultural and educational programming •Encourage outside groups to sponsor cultural and educational programs at the Library •Seek funding to expand the range of programs available Goal: To develop and maintain the collections, staff and resources to meet the library needs of the Beverly community. Objectives: •Periodically review each item in the collection to determine its timeliness and accuracy, its appropriateness to the needs of Library users, and its physical condition. •Maintain a program of book repair and rebinding materials that are vital to the collection and cannot be replaced •Use NOBLE Collection Assessment reports and circulation reports to evaluate collection needs •Constantly reassess the library’s staffing needs in light of the changing technology and the community’s needs for service •Secure funding to maintain an adequate collection of library materials
