Regular Meeting
Board of Trustees - Beverly Public Library
September 18, 1995 7:30 P.M.
Present: Nancy Bender, Edward Brindle, Diane Costa, Kay Fanning, Margaret Goodwin, Neil Olson,
Kevin O~eilly, Helga Senko, John Young.
Also Present: Thomas Scully, Anna Langstaff.
Diane Costa presided.
Kay Fanning made the motion, seconded by Edward Brindle, to accept the minutes of June 19, 1995
as read. Motion passed.
Committee Reports
Personnel: No report.
Administration: No report.
Finance: No report.
Long Range Planning: 1) Nancy Bender reported on work being done for Long Range Plan. Mission
statement and survey draft were presented. There was a discussion on the potential makeup and role
of the Citizen's Advisory Committee and the need to develop a methodology to survey non-library
users. Meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, 1995 at 7:00 P.M. and Wednesday,
November 8, 1995 at 7:00 P .M.. 2) Appraisal Day: Nancy Bender discussed final details for Appraisal
Day Saturday, September 30, 1995 10-3 P.M.
Report of the Library Director
1) Summer Reading Program: Tom Scully reported on the Summer Reading Program held in the
Children's Room this Summer. 2) Vandalism: There have been some vandalism problems at the Main
Library. Tom Scully discussed building security issues for the Farms Branch with Police Chief
Finnegan. 3) Arbitration: T .L.T. and the City have rested their ease. The arbitrator did a building walk
through Friday, September 15, 1995.4) School Library Supervision: School Media Director did not
retire. Public Library supervision of public school libraries may be brought up again this year. 5)
Automation: New computers, donated by the Friends of the Library, and printers have arrived.
EBSCO on-line magazine service has been installed. 6) Teeh Model: Tom Scully is on Tech Model
Committee. Members of this committee will be working on a home page for the City. 7) Staff
Development: A full staff meeting was held July 26, 1995. Anna Langstaff is working on issues of
staff development, training, and customer service.
Communications
1) Margaret Goodwin discussed her letter of July 31, 1995 to Mayor Seanlon. 2) Diane Costa
discussed possible fund raiser or activity with the schooner, The Adventure.
Unfinished Business
1 ) Cookbook Fund Raiser: Library Friends Board has been approached about doing a cookbook as
a fund raiser. 2) Nancy Bender asked about wording on exhibit policy.
New Business
None
The next meeting of the Board will be Monday, October 16, 1995 at 7:30 P.M. at the Main Library.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:10 P.M.
