Present: Nancy Bender, Diane Costa, Kay Fanning, Margaret Goodwin, Nell Olson, Kevin O~,eilly,
Helga Senko, John Young.
Also Present: Thomas Scully, Anna Langstaff.
Diane Costa presided.
Kay Fanning made the motion, seconded by Helga Senko, to accept the minutes of March 20, 1995
as read. Motion passed.
Committee Reports
Personnel: Personnel Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, 1.995 at 7 PM.
Administration: Helga Senko reported on Administration Committee meeting held April, 24, 1995
at 6:30 PM to discuss an exhibit policy. Tom Scully will write a draft policy to present at next Board
meeting. Helga Senko also reported that Tom Seully conducted a tour of the Farms Branch Library
for members of the Administration Committee.
Finance: No report.
Long Range Planning: No report.
Report of the Library Director
1 ) Tom Scully presemed monthly budget report. 2) Tom Seully reported on his Widget- meeting with
Mayor ScanIon. 3) Periodical Collection: Because of past budget cuts, our periodical collection has
been cut by two-thirds (see attached chart and list). Beginning July 1, 1995 the Noble computer
network will be adding a periodical indexing and full text service to our database. Cost: $3500. 4)
Friendly Garden Club Proposal: Tom Scully presented the Friendly Garden Club's proposed library
garden plan in memory of Chris Landman (see attached). The Friendly Garden Club will buy, plant,
and maintain the garden. Nancy Bender made the motion, seconded by Neil. Olson, to:
accept the Friendly Garden Club's plan to make and maintain a garden for the library. Motion
carried.
5) Beverly Improvement Society: Society will donate $1000 to replace dogwood removed during
construction. 6) Communication from Henry Glovsky: The library has been named a beneficiary in
a will for which Mr. Glovsky is the executor. The library will receive approximately $18,000. 7)
Meetings with Caleb Loring HI: Tom Scully reported on meeting with Caleb Loring HI on April. 1.3,
1995 to discuss list of capital improvements needs. There will be a meeting with Caleb Loring HI on
April 27, 1995 at the Farms Library to walk through the Farms building.
Communicat ions
1. ) Nancy Bender received an invitation to Montserrat Auction to be held on May 6, 1995. One of
Will Barnet's works will be auctioned.
Unfinished Business
1) Faxms House Tour: Date is May 20, 1-995.2) Cocktail Party Fund Raiser has been aceled. Joe
Mahoney will make a donation to the library instead. 3) Photography Project: Even though the
Cocktail Party Fund Raiser has been canceled, Tom Scully will continue to work on photography
project to reproduce postcards of old Beverly homes for a permanent photography collection. 4)
Display Boards: Boards need to be recovered. Nancy Bender will try to get fabric donated. 5)
Appraisal Day: Date is Saturday, September 30, 1995. Time: 10 am - 3 p.m. (?). Location: Cove
Community Center (?) 6) Long Range Plan: Meetings to begin writing a long range plan will be
scheduled for this Summer at the May or June board meeting. Tom Scully will. invite Anne McG-rath
and Cathy Babb, school librarians, to join the committee writing the long range plan. 7) Fogg Room
Chairs: Chairs have been ordered for the Fogg Room. 8) New York Times Stock Certificate: Stock
certificate has been sold. Beverly National. Bank waived its handling fee. Farms librarians would like
to buy a laser printer from the proceeds of the stock certificate. 9) Dinner for Nancy Bender: Date
is April 28, 1995 6-10 PM at the Beverly Golf and Tennis.
New Business
1 ) Kingston Library: Neil Olson may be invited to Kingston Public Library Dedication as a
representative of the Beverly Public Library. 2) American Libraries Article: Photograph of Beverly
Public Library appeared in April 1995 issue of American Libraries. 3) Fund Raising: Diane Costa
discussed the difficulty of doing big ticket fund raisers; therefore, the library should perhaps think
about doing more modest fund raisers like the Rotary Club's Dream Auction.
The next meeting ofthe Board will be, Monday, May 15, 1995 at 7:00 PM at the Main Library.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM
