Present: Nancy Bender, Chair, Edward Brindle, Diane Costa, Margaret DeSantis, Kay Fanning,
Margaret Goodwin, Nell Olson, Helga Senko.
Also Present: Thomas Scully, Anna Langstaff, Paul Van Ness.
Nancy Bender presided.
The minutes of the meeting on January 10, 1994 were changed ~to
1) Bank fund raiser date is March 9, 1,994 2) Delete sentence "it was agreed that the reference room
will be dedicated to Esther Calish" and insert "it was agreed, that the reference room will be dedicated
in memory of Esther Calish" 3) Delete sentence "Luanna Little has agreed to mn the optional black
tie/food tasting fund raiser" and insert ~,uanna Little has agreed to explore to run optional black tie
fund raiser:" Edward Brindle made the motion, seconded by Diane Costa, to accept the minutes as
mended. Motion passed.
Presentation by Paul Van Ness
Paul Van Ness, a Beverly artist, made a presentation of his proposal to obtain a gram to finance his
artwork to be placed in the new library at no cost to the city or the library (copy of proposal on file
with these minutes). Nancy Bender thanked Paul Van Ness for his presentation. Margaret Goodwin
will send thank you to him. The Board then discussed the need to formulate a policy on accepting
donations of art to the library.
Election of Officers
Edward Brindle entered a nomination, seconded by Kay Fanning, for Nancy Bender to continue as
chair. Nancy Bender entered a nomination, seconded by Helga Senko, for Diane Costa to continue
as secretary. Nancy Bender was elected by acclamation. Diane Costa was elected by acclamation.
Committee Reports
Personnel: No report.
Administration: Helga Senko will contact art restorer to look at 2 paintings at Main L~rary. There
was a discussion of 2 paintings at the Farms Library donated by the Greenough Family. They may be
in need of restoration and/or replacement. Thomas Scully will check to see if they are on permanent
loan.
Finance: Edward Brindle reported that the Finance Committee met on February 28, 1994 to make
recommendations on the FY94/95 budget. The Finance Committee recommended that the Board
approve the proposed budget of $740,530.52 for FY94/95 arid, in addition, recommended to present
to the Board an alternative "wish list" budget of $933,199.90 based on a minimum operating budget
for a library of this size and scope with its recommendations that both budgets be submitted to the
Mayor and City Council. Kay Fanning made the motion, seconded by Diane Costa, to accept the
budget proposals. The motion was unanimously approved.
Long Range Planning: 1) Bank Fund raiser: Details and final plans were discussed. 2) An Auction:
Diane Costa reported on the meeting with Ross Galleries representative. The event will. be advertised
in newspapers, on cable t.v., etc. Ruth Bauer will make poster displays. Invitations will be mailed out
at end of March. Auctioneers will arrive around 3 or 4 p.m. on April 9. Diane Costa will arrange for
help unloading the an work. Volunteers are needed on the register (2), as runners (2), and at the
auction desk (3). Desserts will be served during preview of items. We need 25 6-8' tables arid 115
chairs. Diane Costa arid Edward Brindle will inquire about tables. 3) Dedication Ceremony: Susan
Innocenti and Nancy Bonne, library staff, will help plan library programs for the dedication week.
Nancy Bender arid Helga Senko will work on planning dedication ceremony. Governor Weld will riot
be keynote speaker. Senate President William Bulger has been asked to be keynote speaker. There
will be no general mailing of invitations for dedication ceremony. The following people will receive
invitations: Komich Family; people who donated to -the building fund; old Library Trustees; directors,
trustees, and staffof local libraries; city council members, mayor, school committee members, and
other elected officials; and M.B.L.C. staff.
Report of the Library Director
1 ) City Council passed ordinance requiting that all city council members be kept informed by city
departments of all matters that would affect their ward. 2) Janice Shaw is new adult services librarian.
Robin Elbot and Brenda Wettergreen have been hired as new Farms librarians. 3 ) We are currently
reviewing resumes and conducting interviews for custodial position. 4) Building: We do not know
when stairway will be done. Desks will arrive in 4-6 weeks. 100 chairs have been ordered for the
lecture hall. 5) Chamber Music Concert will be Saturday, April 16, 1994 7:30-9:00 PM. 6) Barnet
Room: Jeff Hoover will design a method for hanging Bamet prints.
Unfinished Business
1) Nancy Bender will call Mr. Benevento regarding his painting.
2) Nancy Bender will re-contact Tom Alexander about putting together a brochure outlining ways
in which money can be donated to the Beverly Public Library.
The next meeting of the Board will be Monday March 21, 1994 at 7:00 PM at the Main Library.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.
