November 22, 1993 7:00 p.m.
Present: Nancy Bender, Edward Brindle, Diane Costa, Margaret DeSantis, Margaret Goodwin,
George Heller, Neff Olson, Helga Senko.
Also Present: Thomas Scully, Anna Langstaff
Nancy Bender presided.
The minutes of the meeting of October 18, 1993 were changed to delete the sentence, "Larry Smith
recommends not in December-not enough preparation time," and insert, "Margaret DeSantis will
meet with Larry Smith to discuss Black Tie Fund raiser." Edward Brindle made the motion, seconded
by Diane Cost0., to accept the minutes as amended. Motion passed.
Committee Reports
Personnel: No report.
Administration: No report.
Finance: Ed Brindle will meet with Tom Scully to discuss budget for next year.
Long Range Planning: 1 ) Black Tie Bank Fund raiser: Larry Smith will fund $1,500 towards the cost
of the event. Margaret DeSantis and Margaret Goodwin will continue with planning: invitations, ideas
for brochures, caterer, music, flowers, and how bank will handle donations. Nancy Bender will solicit
for flowers. Tom Scully will contact appropriate persons to ask Bob Seamans to be honorary
chairman of the fund raiser. Three subcommittees are needed: corporate chairperson, personal
chairperson, service organizations chairperson. Date for fund raiser: March 2, 1994.
2) Margaret Goodwin reported that New England Biolabs Foundation should be sending a response
soon. No response from Bank of Boston. 3) Send thank you letters to Eastern Bank and John Updike.
4) Art Auction: Date--April 9, 1994. George Heller will chair with Diane Costa's help. Margaret
Goodwin will inform Chamber of Commerce of the April 9th date. 5) Eurotunnel Lecture: George
Heller and Diane Costa will arrange. Suggested guest list: city planners, engineers, architects, city and
government officials, transportation and travel industry people. Nancy Bender will call Michele Mann
for names to add to list. Date for lecture: March 23, 1994 or April 6, 1994. 6) Black Tie Dance
Fund raiser: Nancy Bender will contact Michele Mann to discuss arrangements. 7) Dedication
Ceremony: Date: April I0, 1994 2:00 p.m. Nancy Bender will arrange for a chairperson. It will be
necessary to maintain a database of names for dedication ceremony.
Report of the Library Director
1) Tom Scully reported on the visit of Mayor-elect Bill ScanIon to the library. 2) Anna Langstaffhas
been appointed Assistant Director. 3) Tom Scully proposed filling opening at the Farms Branch with
a job-share position. The Board agreed with this proposal. 4) Closing on Sunday after Christmas and
New Year's: the Board agreed to leave this decision up to the director.
Unfinished Business
1 ) Trust Fund Commission: Tom ScuHy will set up appointment with Commission aRer the first of
the year. 2) ARer general discussion the Board decided not to send cold contact letters at this time.
3) Mr. Benevento's painting: Nancy Bender will ask Mr. Benevento to deliver painting to the library.
New Business
1) Library Art: Neil Olson will provide the Board with a list of names of art restorers. 2) Farms
Christmas Party will be on December 5, 1993.
The next meeting of the Board will be Wednesday, December 29, 1993, at 7:00 p.m. at the Main
Library.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjoumed at 9:00 p.m.
