2000-03-26City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Board of Health Subcommittee: Date: March 16, 2000 Place: Senior Center, Conference Room Board members present: Frank Carbone, Jr., M.D., Norman Spector and Peter A. Hersee Board members absent: Others present: William T. Burke, Director of Public Health and Thomas Scully, Director of Community Services Recorder: Judith Balboni The meeting was called to order at 7:30 a.m. The Board reviewed and accepted the minutes of February 17, 2000 meeting. Mr. Burke informed the Board of the Recreational Camp Informational Meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 4, 2000. Staff members, along with a representative from the state will discuss amendments to the camp regulations. Directors will be urged to start necessary paperwork ahead of time and were warned of possible shutdown, for non-compliance. A letter introducing Mr. Steve Douglas from North Coastal Boards of Health Collaborative was sent out to food establishment, permit holders. The letter stated that Steve would begin visiting the establishment to inform and provide copies of the ETS Regulation, answer compliance questions and get a feel of any potential variance requests. The Board discussed revisiting the ETS Regulation in time, as surrounding communities or state level make changes. The Household Hazardous Waste Oversight Committee selected Safety-Kleen as the hazardous waste contractor and Product Take Back Inc., for electronics at its March 15, 2000 meeting. Mr. Burke met with Nancy Pia, Senior Vice-President, Health and Education Services, Inc. to discuss services provided by Project Rap. Mr. Burke and Ms. Doherty, Dental Clinic Coordinator reviewed posters from 5th graders who participated in the Massachusetts Public Health Associations' Poster Contest 2000. Poster requirement was to depict completion of one of the following three statements: I protect myself from injury when I... My family stays healthy by... My community protects our environment when we... The poster selected was submitted to MPHA for final judging during Public Health Week, April 3-9, 2000. Joanne LeClerc, Public Health Nurse provided the Board with written report of Vision & Hearing Screenings at the two parochial schools. The Board questioned the future of a Health Fair. It is understood that with such short staffing, a fair as we knew in the past is not possible. Mr. Burke has been discussing with other communities and Beverly Hospital the possibility of a 1-day event or the putting together of a resource book to benefit city and surrounding communities. Mr. Burke discussed with the Board the correspondence to be sent to Mr. Boudreau of Anchor Pub & Grille regarding compliance with the ETS Regulations. The Board suggested adding a statement advising Mr. Boudreau that future state and/or local regulations may require establishments to 100% smoke-free. Mr. Burke provided the Board with a report of the special legislative commission on Oral Health," The Oral Health Crisis in Massachusetts" in which the Beverly Dental Clinic was mentioned as a school based clinic model.
