Present: Nancy Bender, Edward Brindle, Diane Costa, Margaret DeSantis, Kay Fanning, Margaret
Goodwin, Neil Olson, Helga Senko, Toby Shindiet.
Also Present: Tom Scully, Sheila Glowaeki, Michele Mann, League of Women Voters.
Nancy Bender presided.
Kay Fanning moved that the minutes of the previous meeting be accepted. Motion passed.
There were no committee reports.
Librarians report: 1 ) Concerning the Hardie Building, we have a demolition permit, but as of yet we
do not have a building permit. 2) There was a meeting at the Mayor's office with representatives from
the Library, Montserrat School of Art, Planning Dept., Fire Dept., and the building inspector. The
Library's responsibility for the building is the handicapped ramp and 1~, handicapped rest rooms, fire
alarm and sprinkler system. 3) The City is now going to sell the Dalton house at public auction. 4)
The application for state aid was filed last week. The library budget does not meet minimum
requirements for state aid and did not last year. If we lose our state aid that means $32,000. less in
our budget next year. The Director has applied for a waiver, but to be eligible the city must
appropriate an additional $5600. to our budget this year. We will know in March or April if we have
been granted a waiver. 5) There will be a Building Commission meeting this Thursday. 6) The staff
is currently weeding excess equipment and material in preparation for the move. 7) Margaret
DeSantis will cheek with the Beverly National Bank to see if they will store our Will Barnet prints
during the renovation, 8) This Wednesday afternoon members of our staff are meeting with the school
librarians to discuss interdepartmental cooperation. 9) The Assistant Director reported on her behind
the scenes tour of the new Newton Public Library.
The Board decided to cancel the December meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45.
