Present: Nancy Bender, Edward Brindle, Diane Costa, Margaret DeSantis, Kay Fanning, Margaret
Goodwin, Nell Olson, Helga Senko, Toby Shindler.
Also present: Thomas Scully, Sheila Glowacki.
Nancy Bender presided.
Disposition of minutes of previous meeting: Edward Brindle moved that the minutes of the previous
meeting be accepted. Seconded by Helga Senko. Motion passed.
There was no public presentation to the Board. Michele Mann will be the League observer beginning
in the Fall,
Committee reports: Personnel: No report.
Administration: No report.
Finance: Concerning the budget that was submitted to City Hall by the Board of Trustees, raises for
both the Director and Assistant Director were cut out. $4,000. was cut out of the $5,000.
Maintenance Account. $2,000 was taken out of the $2,700. for book preparation. $25,000. was cut
from the book budget.
Long Range Planning: No report.
Report of the Librarian: 1 ) The Building Commission is meeting tomorrow night May 21. There was
a meeting of the Director, Assistant Director, Architect, City Planner, City Building Inspector, and
several representative of the Montserrat School of An who are also interested in the Hardie building.
The City Planner is preparing a use study of the building for the Board of Aldermen. Her report is
going to recommend that the library be allowed to move into the basement and first floor of the
building during the construction project. The Building Inspector is opposed to the School moving in
on safety grounds but he has no objections to us moving in for the two years during construction. His
only concerns is that we make the rest rooms and the entry way handicapped accessible. 2)
Concerning the Dalton property, John Archer is still pursuing purchasing it. 3 ) The library won the
public relations award from the Massachusetts Library Association. Mary Harvey is responsible for
the publicity that we do. 4) The City Managers are in the process of organizing and there will be a
management union. There will be a hearing before the Labor Relations Board next Friday to
determine who cannot and carmot be a member
Communications: The Director received a letter from a patron, praising the work of our Children's
Librarian, Nancy Bonne.
Unfinished business: 1) The Director has submitted the library's vehicle use policy to the City Solicitor
and has not had a response. 2) The Farms House Tour was a huge success and will have earned over
$10,000.
The next meeting will be Monday June 17.
