Present: Nancy Bender, Diane Costa, Margaret DeSantis, Margaret Goodwin, Neil Olson, Toby
Shindler.
Also present: Thomas Scully and Sheila Glowacki.
Nancy Bender presided.
Disposition of the minutes of the previous meeting: Diane Costa moved to accept the minutes of the
previous meeting. Motion passed.
Committee reports: No reports given.
Report of the Librarian: 1) The contract was received from the Board of Library Commissioners for
the $2 million for the building project. Patience Jackson from the Board strongly urged that the
Mayor sign the contract before the November election to guarantee that we receive the money. Toby
Shindler moved that a copy of the contract be sent to the Mayor, Board of Aldermen, and City
Solicitor with a request that the Board of Aldermen authorize the Mayor to sign it as soon as
possible. Motion passed. 2) The DPW is fixing the sidewalks at the Farms. 3) The Friends of the
Farms are planning a Spring fund raiser. They are planning a tours of several houses in Prides
Crossing. 4) Betsy Long former Technical Sewices L~rarian has accepted the position of Director
of the Augusta, Maine Public Library. 5) The three oil tanks have been replaced for $2195. by
Michaud and Raymond. 6) The burglar alarm system which has been giving us problems lately with
false alarms has been upgraded costing $900. 7) The Friends of the Library have donated $2500. for
a computer primer and also $1000. for books and videos. They will be doing a city wide mailing
encouraging people to support the building project. Nancy suggested that a note of thanks be sent
to the Friends.
Old business: Diane Costa reported that she had spoken to someone about renting the Galvin house
and they were not interested. She suggested that maybe Gordon College students might be interested.
Nancy wrote a letter to Howard Calish saying the plaque dedicating the Reference Room to Esther
Calish has been hung in the Reference
Room.
The next meeting will be Monday November 19.
