TRUSTEES MEETING
May 21. 1990

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Diane Costs,, President Pro-Tern. Present were
trustees: Edward Brindle, Kay Fanning. Neil Olson, Toby Shindler, Helga Senko and Diane Costa.
Also present were Thomas Scully, Library Director, Sheila Glowaeki, Assistant Library Director and
Margaret Goodwin.
Correction to the minutes of the previous meeting: Diane Costa should not have been listed as being
present.
MOTION: By Kay Fanning to accept the minutes of the previous meeting as corrected. VOTED
UNANIMOUSLY.
MOTION: By Kay Fanning to suspend the roles to proceed directly to the Library Director's report.
VOTED UNANIMOUSLY.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
1) Tom Scully, along with some other library directors, trustees and State Library
Commissioners and their staff met with Governor Dukakis concerning the State construction money.
The Governor was generally supportive of the program and promised to consider funding the
program if the Legislature passed the pending tax package.
2) The Mayor has proposed additional cuts in the heating and telephone accounts for the FY
1991 budget. The Finance and Property Committee of the Board of Aldermen has yet to decide on
whether to meet with the Trustees about the budget.
3) The Library Director recommended that the library be closed on Saturdays and Sundays
from July I through Labor Day to save money in the salary account.
NEW BUSINESS
1 ) A letter of resignation was rw, eivod from Thomas Hindman, Young Adult Librarian.
MOTION: Kay Fanning moved that Tom Hindman's resignation be accepted with regret. VOTED
UNANIMOUSLY.
2) A copy of Susan Salt's letter of resignation from the Board of Trustees was read and placed
on file.
3) MOTION: Neil Olson moved that the Library be closed on Saturdays and Sundays from
July I through Labor Day 1990. VOTED UNANIMOUSLY.
4) MOTION: Kay Fanning moved to approved a request to the Mayor to transfer $35,618
from the Library Salary Account to the Library Building Commission Account to pay the outstanding
architects bills and a transfer of$11,000 from the Library Salary Account to the Library Purchase of
Materials Account. VOTED UNANIMOUSLY.
5) There was a discussion of investigating the possibility of a public fund raising campaign to
raise money to finish the design work for the new library and to purchase the Galvin property on
Dane Street.
6) Diane Costa reported on the Legislative reception at the Robbins Library in Arlington to
lobby for the release of the State Public Library Construction Funds. Attending that meeting were
Diane Costa~ Kay Fanning, John Coogan from the Library Building Commission, Tom ScuHy and
Sheila Glowacki.
Meetings was adjourned at 7:00 to meet with the Board of Aldermen's Legal Affairs
Committee concerning the education leave for Sheila Glowacki.
