Present: Nancy Bender, Edward Brindle, Fran McCarthy, Neil Olson, Susan Salt, Helga Senko, Toby
Shindler, Diane Costa.
Also present: Thomas Scully and Sheila Glowacki.
Nancy Bender presided.
Disposition of the minutes of the previous meeting: Susan Salt moved that the minutes of the previous
meeting be approved. Motion passed.
Committee reports: Personnel: Mr. Shindler asked the Assistant, Director to read the minutes from
the last personnel committee meeting. 44. Shindler thanked the committee for their hard work VI
evaluating the performance of the Library Director. ED" Scully reported that the new Assistant Adult
Services Librarian will be starting on October 2, 1989. Susan Salt moved that: the Board accept the
report of the Personnel Committee with the addition that Mr. Brindle was in attendance. Motion
passed.
Administration: No report.
Finance: No report.
Long Range Planning: No report.
Librarian's report: I) Summer programs included summer reading clubs at the main library and the
Farms, a pajama story hour at the main library and a film series at the, Farms All. were well attended.
A book signing was held both at the main Library and the Farms for Will Barnet's "World in a Frame"
an illustrated collection of Emily Diekenson's poetry. 2) The Building Commission met with the City
Solicitor in August about the Purchase and Sale agreement for the Dalton house and it is going before
the Board of Aldermen tonight. 3) Over the summer the architect has been meeting with the staff to
review floor plans for the library addition. The Director, Assistant Director, and architect hag also
traveled to other libraries to see how they have resolved various design problems. 4) Concerning the
building grant, we are waiting for the state to issue its list of priorities for capital projects. 4) Library
Legislative Day is October 4, at the State House. There will be speakers, refreshments and then an
opportunity to lobby local legislators. Pressing issues include the construction grant money and an
increased budget for the Eastern Region Library System. 5) Two positions were filled this summer.
Mary Harvey is the new Assistant Adult Services Librarian and Tom Maclntyre is the new Jr.
Custodian 6) If anyone has their M.L.T.A. membership renewals give them to the Director. The
Annual Conference is going to be Saturday October 28, in Worcester. Fran McCarthy will attend.
Unfinished business: 1) concerning the offsite storage, at the moment U.S.M. has given us the lowest
price at $4.50 per square foot. We will have to go out to bid, however. Books will not actually go
into storage until about March. We will need to go out to bid for shelving in November or early
December. 2) Concerning the letter received from Jolene Laxsen earlier this year, no further
communication has been received. 3) The Board of Aldermen have approved the three year contracts
for both the Director and Assistant Director.
The next meeting will be Monday, October 16, at 7:30 PM at the Main Library.
