BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
MINUTES July 7, 1987
Present: Kevin Murphy. Nancy Bender, Kathleen Henrichon, Kay Farming, Frances McCarthy, Toby
Shindler, Edward Brindle, Susan Salt
Absent: Neil Olson.
Fran McCarthy reported for the Finance Committee on the cuts recommended to stay within the FY
1988 budget as approved by the Board of Aldermen:
1) Summer hours shall begin on Memorial Day weekend and extend through Labor Day
weekend.
2) Beverly Farms. Branch will open at 1:30 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday rather than
1:00.
3) Have the first custodial shit~ report at 8:00 am instead of 7 am.
4) Cut back on the purchase of extra copies of new books, eliminate purchase of video
cassettes and make necessary reductions in the numbers of new titles as required by the
budget.
Nancy Bender made a statement, that the Finance Committee and the Board should not make specific
recommendations for cuts in the book budget,. but that that should be the responsibility of the library
director.
General discussion followed as to whether the library should make the cuts recommended by the
Finance Committee or postpone a decision in the hopes that sufficient money could saved by not
MOTION by Susan Salt, seconded by Nancy Bender to instruct the director to implement the
necessary service reductions immediately to live within the budget appropriation. SO VOTED
UNANIMOUSLY.
MOTION by Susan Salt, seconded by Nancy Bender to amend the recommendation on the summer
schedule to have the summer schedule run from July 1 to September 30, rather than Memorial Day
to Labor day and that the Farms Hours be cut 3-2. hour on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. 7 votes
in the affirmative, Kay Fanning voting in the negative.
Long Range Planning Committee is scheduled for July 20 at 7:30 p.m.
