This funding will support the Beverly Powder House restoration and preservation project, which will be completed between March -June 2020. The Powder House was built in 1808 by Nathan Dane and was used to store a large amount of gunpowder because it was much safer than having residents store it in their homes. The Powder House is one of Beverly's most unique historical structures, but has fallen into a state of disuse and is in need of rehabilitation efforts to preserve the structure. The structure's full restoration will preserve an important piece of community history. The Powder House was recently accepted for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Massachusetts General Law Chapter 44 Section 53A requires both City Council and Mayoral approval before any grant, earmark, donation or gift to the City can be expended for their prescribed purpose.
