Present: Edward Brindle, Kay Fanning, Kathleen Henrichon, Susan Salt, Toby Shindler, Nancy White
Also Present: Matthew Fearer, Beverly Times; Joanne Menesale, Salem Evening News; Diane Costa,
League of Women Voters; Howard Calish, Friends of the Library; Thomas Scully and Sheila
Glowacki.
Kathleen Hen~chon presided.
Disposition of the minutes of the previous meeting: Susan Salt moved that the minutes of the June
17 meeting be approved. Motion passed.
Public presentation to. discussion with the Board:
Committee reports: Personnel: A copy of the contract for the Library Director was received from
Alan Kaplan. However, it did not include the changes that were agreed upon at the last meeting. The
contract was retyped to include the changes. Kathy Henrichon will get in touch with the City Solicitor
to make sure he has approved the contract and sent it on to the Mayor for his approval and
presentation to the Board of Aldermen.
Administration: In regard to the roof, Eric Kluz the architect, stated that as of today, July 3 1, the
work has been completed to his satisfaction. Kevin Murphy will discuss the payment settlement with
the City Solicitor.
Finance: The end of the year finances allowed for the automation of the Farms Branch and the
Bookmobile.
Long Range Planning: There has been no meeting of the Committee. Tom has met with Anthony
Tappe and Mr. Offant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Mr. Tappe has sent the plans
for the Hardie School and the present building to the Costing Department.
Librarian's Report: 1 ) Barbara Hyde, Head of the Bookmobile has resigned. Mr. Scully recommended
that the position be filled at a Grade 16 level. Susan Salt moved that the Board request permission
from the Board of Aldermen to fill the position of Bookmobile Librarian at a Grade 16 level. Motion
passed. 2) In order to make the Farms Branch more accessible to students, the Director made the
following recommendations for change in the hours. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday - 1-6 PM,
Wednesday - 9-5, and Saturday 9-5. Kay Fanning moved to adopt the new hours at the Farms
effective September 1, on a trial basis. Motion passed. 3) There is a situation of loose asbestos at the
Farms. This area has been designated off limits to the public and employees. Nancy White moved that
the Director contact the School Department and the Mayor to see if the Library can be included with
the School Department contract for the total removal of all asbestos at the Farms. Motion passed.
4) A report was given on the condition of the Bookmobile. In the last six months it has been off the
road more that it has been on. The need for a new Bookmobile was discussed. Nancy White moved
that the Director, Assistant Director, and any other professionals involved, with the help of the Board,
prepare a presentation regarding the effectiveness of our Bookmobile, to be given to the Beverly
service organizations and other clubs in the City.
And as soon as that presentation is prepared, we request to be placed on the agenda at the next
meeting of the Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, and the Friends of the Library and try to solicit enough money
from those organizations to buy the model bookmobile that will best serve the citizens of Beverly.
Motion passed.
The Chairman will discuss this need with the Mayor and solicit any ideas or suggestions from him.
Toby Shindler moved that before the Bookmobile goes out again that the emergency brakes be fixed,
and if the DPW cannot do the work, the Director is authorized to send it to Atlantic Trucking to be
fixed. Motion passed. 5) The Children's Department will be sponsoring a "Tune out TV" Week for
Children's Book Week in November. Those who sign up will agree not to watch TV for a week.
Communication: A letter was read from Suzanne Michaud, offering to donate a portrait of General
Eisenhower to the Library. Kathy Henrichon will take a look at the portrait and report back at the
next meeting.
Unfinished Business: Nancy White asked if the Library is still receiving the Dog Tax. Mr. Scully will
investigate the status and report back at the next meeting,
New Business: The Assistant Director thanked the Board and gave a report on the American Library
Association Convention held in New York. Susan -Salt commented on the importance of the Trustees
belonging to the Massachusetts Trustees Association for the information that can be exchanged.
