Regular Meeting
Board of Trustees -- Beverly Public Library
March 25, 1985 7:30 PM
Present: Richard Buckley, Kathy Henrichon, Fran McCarthy, Kevin Murphy, Toby Shindler, and
Nancy White.
Also present: Esther Calish, Sheila Glowacki; Marjorie Dragonas, Vada Komich, League of Women
Voters; Howard Calish, Friends of the Library; Edmond Mander, Beverly Times; William Green.
Disposition of the minutes of the previous meeting: Nancy White moved to approve the minutes of
the previous meeting. Motion earfled.
President Henrichon distributed copies of the committee assignments for the coming year.
Administration: Kevin Murphy spoke with Joseph Mulligan and the membrane is in place on the roof.
Once the outside temperature remains above 40 degrees the roof work can be completed in three
weeks. Mr. Murphy and Mulligan will inspect the roof this Thursday to try to determine the cause
of a severe leak that occurred during a recent rainstorm that damaged materials in the ehildren's room.
Mrs. Calish will be submitting a report on the condition of the building in May. Nancy White moved
to request from the Mayor and appropriate city personnel, assistance in assessing the condition of the
library building. Motion passed.
Finance: No report.
Personnel: No report.
Report of the Librarian: 1 ) Pat Barton has resigned as Children's Library Assistant. Nancy White
moved to request permission of the Mayor and Aldermen to fill the position of Children's Library
Assistant. Motion passed. 2) We have received two gifts from the Friends of the Ll'orary. First a gift
of $5,000. which has been used to purchase a microcomputer for use in the Children's Room.
Equipment Includes an Apple He computer, 2 monitors. 2 disk drives, a printer, and a locked cabinet
for storage. Software will be limited to educational games. In addition the Friends have given $1000.
to enable us to become an aff~iate of the Foundation Center. This money will be used to purchase
foundation directories which includes Massachusetts Foundations. We will also purchase a special
micro~che viewer so we may use the IRS 990's. The staff will also be trained to assist patrons in
using these materials. We hope to have this in operation by the end of the summer. 3) Toby Shindler
moved to close the library for Easter Sunday. Motion passed.
The Board of Trustees complimented Mrs. Calish on the work that was done on the Annual Report.
Communications - Communications were read from Patricia Barton, The League of
Women Voters, Naomi Cohen and Mayor Monahan.
Unfinished Business: A lengthy discussion took place concerning the parking lot situation. Items
discussed included installing parking meters, having a parking lot attendant, encouraging parking at
Almy's. Before the next meeting library patrons will be surveyed on their feelings about parking
meters, the President of North Sh ore Community College will be contacted and Officer Gagne of the
Beverly Police Department will be invited to speak to the Board about the installation of parking
meters.
Mrs. McCarthy asked if the minutes of the executive sessions of the board were going to be made
public. She said according to the "open meeting" law records of an executive session must be made
public when they have been approved by the members of the governing body and that approval has
been entered into the record.
The long range planning committee will meet Tuesday, April 2 at 7:30 at the library. Nancy White
invited anyone who is interested to attend.
The next regular board meeting will be held Monday April 22, at 7:30.
Public presentation: Mr. William Green spoke about the custodians experiences in monitoring the
parking lot. Marjorie Dragonas spoke in favor of parking meters in the parking lot.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:42 PM.
